tip up or tip down?

Tip up. Its what I'm use to. I started with a Spyderco Endura, and have trained with it the most. Its just quicker to deploy for me. Some people started with tip down and its what they are use to.

I like tip up. It's just easier for me. My BM 710 is tip up, and it's really easy to deploy.

Not this again. Let's not beat a dead horse- check the archives and read all about it

Some folks mighta missed the original posts, so I'll answer here, since I missed it originally.

I never really cared if the knife was tip up or tip down until I had a tip up slightly open while in my pocket.

Only opened about 1/4", but it was enough to give me a nice "owwie! mommy it hurts!" when I reached in for some change.

The knife wasn't a POS either. It just didn't lock closed as securely as many others.

I don't recall replying to this grey-haired thread during its many incarnations past, so I'll do so now: I've always preferred tip down, purely because it eliminates the possibility of sticking yourself when you go for the knife.

It's about time for this old tune to come 'round on the old banjo again.

Tip down... The way God intended folders to be carried.

That is unless it's a balisong. In that case, I prefer tip back. A lot of folks go tip foreward and open with a latch drop, but I prefer tip back and a double flip out.

With conventional folders, I've never understood tip-up. It's an ackward draw and dangerous.

Tip down.

Speed (with training) and safety (Try reaching into your pocket and finding out that your not-so-POS knife was half way opened. Thanks, Endura.) (Not a slam on Spyderco, just a hard learned lesson. Still love ya!)

Tip down for me but I know a lot of you swear by the other.I started off years ago with one of the early tip down spydercos and just got used to it.
As far as balisongs tip foward if a vertical holder but generally I used to carry it along my wallet in a rear pocket-and in that case of course it was tip down.

Tip down. Not because of any safty issues, but because I carry mostly in my back right pocket. I reach back grab the top of the knife and pull it out. If it's tip down, I've already got my fingers on the stud/disc/hole. If it's tip up, I have to reach really deep to to get the stud/disc/hole. In your front pocket, tip up works best for me, but I don't normally carry in the front.

Well the last time we discussed it we only had 3000 members. Now we seem to have 4000. That's 1000 new members that might have missed it last time. It won't hurt to discuss it again, someone new to knives might appreciate it.

Some of us have seen this topic about 3 times now in the last year, but one more time won't hurt.

I prefer tip down but will carry either..Love my Endura and Impulse!!

I apologize for wasting "air space", but I am trying to contact a high school friend --Ryckje Wagner -- to whom I haven't spoken in perhaps 25 years. It's possible she posted to this forum. If anyone knows her, please ask her to e-mail me at pammarek@yahoo.com Thanks again for your trouble! (Pam Liebman Marek)

This may be an old topic for some, but newer members may be unaware of this fact. In that I am older than this topic, and most everything else for that matter, I will comment without reservation.

I think tip up or tip down carry is a matter of choice, as many others have stated. I will add however, if you carry a knife for last ditch self-defense purposes, it is important to train, train, train with whatever knife you carry. I believe you should make a reasoned choice between tip-up or tip-down, hole, disk, stud, whatever, and stick with that choice with all knives you carry.

Similarly, with regard to automatic pistols, I always cautioned against carrying a 1911 on the hip and an S&W 669 in an ankle holster. Under stress it is important you do not have to think about the manual of arms associated with the weapon you have accessed. It is important you react quickly and instinctively.

I think the same is true of knives.

Most knives with clips I prefer tip down. When I grab them I don't reach into the pocket and I am closer to the hole or stud with tip down (opener up). If I'm not using a clip I go for tip up if I've got some auto opening feature (hole, stud, or pushbutton) or two-hand opening. With a stiff lockback like a Buck 110, I use tip down to allow a blade-pinch handle flip opening method.

For safety I carry any really loose-opening blades tip down.
