Tip Up / Tip Down ?

I feel the need to expand on my preference for tip down.
My concern is not just for the pivot action but for any lint/dirt/debris that gets in the lock mechanism.
Nothing worse than opening a blade and it doesn't lock, unknown to you :)

I had to cross my legs when reading the careen down the hill and the blade opened and OHMIGOD!! that was close.
I've been lucky that it's never happened to me.
But a bud had his Commander in the pocket and it was open a tiny bit.
Blood everywhere.
Good thing he had deep pockets and I had bandaids and quikclot :)

Oh, I forgot to mention that, like an earring in the right ear, tip up is secret code for 'I am gay'..............

i prefer tip up as most of my favs are tip up (ie emerson CQC8, p-tac, MT LCC) though several are also tip down (crawford ti kasper, perfigo, spyderco police, MT SOCOM elite) imho if ya practice some ya can get either one out fairly quick, though imho tip up is a little better, must say the spyderco ayoob is not one of my favs, but from playing with it i think its one of the easier ones to open fast(tip down) as the thumb doesnt move so far due to the downward angled blade, and its one of the few knives i can open left handed, again for the same reason.

oddly enough the 2 knives i have had probs with opening in my pocket are the spyderco joht singh khalsa(did not like that one at all) and the gunting, both tip up, go figure.

It depends on whether you are carrying a knife with a thumb stud or a thumb hole.

With the thumb stud, if it it tip up, there is a chance (for me every time) of having the stud catching on your pocket edge when drawing it out & partially opening. I have not cut myself yet, but it's a matter of time.

With the thumb hole & have both & with tip down, I grab the hole & draw the knife & it is safely open in my hand by the time it clears my pocket, but have to adjust my grip slightly to get a firm grip on the handle.
With tip up, I grab the handle & do not have to adjust my grip to open & use the knife, but it takes slightly more time.

Lastly, when digging into the bottom of your knife pocket for change, the tip up version is more comfortable as the blade & sharp edges are away from your hand.

Uncleknife good point,I have a custom that has duel studs and is tipdown. When I clip it to my pocket sometimes the stud catches the pocket edge and opens as it goes into the pocket.... .Kind of a reverse wave.

Now that could be disasterous!!!

A few pricked fingers never killed anyone, tip up brings the knife to bear more quickly (for me, anyhow)... point being, real men carry tip up

I prefer tip down only cause it keeps the pivot further from the lint and dirt in my pocket.
I have both types tho.

And I prefer tip up for the same reason in reverse, so no dirt or crap from the outside of my pocket gets into the pivot. Plus, I'm tall enough to where if it's the other way around it doesn't hang low enough to hit the bottom of my pocket anyway. Besides, the bottom of my pocket is where my SAK hides out.

It's tip up for me, if I have a choice with the knife. I'm right handed and carry in my right rear pocket or the back edge of my front right pocket. I reach in, sliding my thumb in alongside the knife, squeeze a little and withdraw. The bulk of the knife is in my hand as it comes out of the pocket--less chance to drop it. My thumb is already near the flipper. Works for me.

Gotta argree with that. Given the choice I've decided its tip up for me every time (especially with my Dodo)
