Tip Up vs. Tip Down

Tip up with blade pointed towards my right side so there is always a seam keeping it closed this works for front or back pocket.

Neither is a deal breaker for me. I prefer tip down, especially on a/o's and flippers, because of an innate fear of reaching into my pocket and getting bit (badly) by a half open blade, it almost happened once, (I always clip in the back corner of my pocket). But I won't not buy a knife I like or carry it, if it is a tip up only option... I have to really like it a lot though.

Tip up is a non starter for me. I wont buy, or even participate in giveaways for knives that are tip up only.

I am right handed and carry on my right rear pocket. I've seen/heard too many "horror stories" of people getting their hands opened up by tip up knives carried like that. Its not worth risking stitches to me.

Switching pockets to the front would throw off my whole carry experience/ setup, which would really mess with my muscle memory. Its possible, and I'd do it if I had to for some reason... But why do that if you don't have to?

What I do find strange is why knives don't come drilled for both...

Which ever orientation keeps the spine of the blade pressed into the seam of the pocket.

I carry larger folders in my back pocket, so tip-down is necessary. Inside right-front, then tip up.

Also, belt sheath.

It depends on the knife, but I generally prefer tip up with most. I do like it when the knife is fitted for either so I can switch it if I want, but that is not always a feature:(

Tip up for me with the following reason (which I haven't seen posted yet or I might have missed the implication): When I pull out the handle out of my pocket, my hand is already holding the knife in the natural way to open the blade outwards.

I dislike tip-down so much that I sent a knife all the way to Thailand to have the problem fixed:

I don't know, I guess it's just preference. All I know is that I can't alternate between tip up and down because I'm so used to tip up. When I extract a knife that is tip down I end up fumbling to open it and vice versa. I also like that the blade is blocked by the seam of my pants on tip up carry so it can't ever really open inside my pocket.

Strangely, I feel the exact same way about Tip down. With the added bonus that this doesn't change at all with varying sizes of knives. My understanding is that with larger/longer tip up knives, your index finger isn't long enough to reach the flipper/etc from the grip you have when you pull it out, which requires a regrip. Tip down you're always grabbing by the pivot, so your thumb is right there by the thumbstud, index finger by the flipper, etc, no matter how large the knife is.

Exactly like me. ALL of my knives and EDC folders (+30) are tip up, but one: The OMUDA Folder, because of that same reason. It is the only knife small enough to fit the back right pocket when my wallet is there, and I find that tip down in that and only that exact place works best, since the drawing motion is smooth and easy. That carry method the most useful and comfortable option for my one and only knife that goes there, in that unique and particular situation and context.

either one is fine with me.

I just hate all the extra clip holes... left hand, right hand, tip up, tip down...

I feel the same way about under-rollers (those freaks that put the toilet paper roll on so the paper emerges at the bottom, along the wall, instead of over the top).

If you carry tip down because a cool knife only comes that way, I'll permit it. If you carry tip down because you prefer it, I assume you have dozens of other signs of mental illness as well.

Holy crap I'm constantly fixing this problem. The wife just puts a roll on but I "fix" it to over the top 👍

I carry my folders in the same fashion I carry my fixed blades, tip down.
If I can't carry tip down, it goes in the pocket.

I prefer tip down and always change it when there's an option.
Wish axis locks had tip down option, to keep them from unintentionally opening on the draw (thumb stud models only).

So, as an FYI, there is a reason that some people do that. My grandparents, and now parents do this, and I found out why a few years ago.

Because grandkids comes over to the house, and can easily hit the roll over and over to make it keep spinning. Then you end up with all the TP all over the floor, etc. If you do it the other way, the way a 2 year old will hit the roll, it will "roll up/wind up", and won't get everywhere or make a mess. They can spin that thing as long as they want, and it stays on the roll.

Apparently after a few kids/grandkids do this to your bathroom, and leave you stranded without TP at a critical moment, you may end up reversing your old habits :p.

Yup, same here brother. I carry tip up in the front right pocket, and tip down in the back left pocket for the same reason.

Varies by knife for me... whatever is most comfortable to me for a particular knife. I'll even switch periodically on some, like the Blur (tip-up, right-front pocket or tip-down, right-rear pocket).
