I bought a used knifemakers vise at the NC show last week. Its by Tipps Machine shop. I've destroyed a lot of knife vises and this one seems better than any I've had. Any word on this shop, or this vise? Are they still available?

There used to be a guy named Sharkey Tipps who manufactured a belt splitter and had a machine shop in East St. Louis.
It had a good reputation and I have not heard of it in some time.
Might be the same guy.

Andy,

I have been using one of these vises for about twenty years. I purchased mine from Pop's, but he sells a different model now. These vises are built to last. I think you will be happy with yours.

I think Karl is correct bout the origins of the vise. Nothing shows up on a web search for the machine shop. Pop might know if they are still around.

Take care

Charles

Now you've got me really curious Andy... I'd love to see some pictures. I couldn't googlefu anything for it.

I'm out of town right now, but I'll try to get pics later next week folks.

The shop was in Fairfield,IL the phone number no longer works and no web presence.

Here's some photos of my vise.

I have one that looks exactly like yours Charles and I use it on every knife I make. I've had mine for 2 years or so and don't have any complaints.
