Tips for cleaning tarnish?

I finally got it in the mail today! After watching the movie "Gladiator" I just had to have a Gladius. Lucky for me Kris Cutlery offers one. Well I got it yesterday. I love this thing! Sharp like my Tarwar and just as well made from what I can tell. One problem though. The handle seems to be attached to the blade with a brass washer and rod. Problem is, the washer is really tarnished. Is there a way that I can clean/polish the washer without damaging the wood? Any tips are very appreciated.

a few things you could try, use a polish (brasso or flitz) on a q-tip and work the area so you dont get it on teh wood, and buff it off with a rag, if its heavy tarnish I would get some fine grade (000 or better) bunch up a small piece and rub the washer, it'll take that tarnish right off, follow that with the polish.

Hmm, I just posted but it didnt show up, lets try again

Use a very fine grade of steel wool (000 or 0000) and carefully clean the washer off with a small piece, This grade of wool should not scratch the wood, you're better off worrying about polishing the surrounding wood more than the original finsh

. Follow that with a qtip loaded with brasso or flitz or whatever, and polish the washer trying not to get too much on the wood.

I most certainly hope that the forum isn't having posting trouble again.
I posted to this question last night and it was here and now it's not.
Strange.

Anyway to try again, Harry and Yoda both brought up a couple of things I posted about, so I will add this about them.

First tape off your handle so it won't get scratched or gunky no matter what is used.

The 0000 steel wool will shine, but it will also leave very fine scratches.
The Brasso Harry mentioned works Great but is a bit messy and using a soft brush like a toothbrush will spead up the process.

For things that are heavily tarnished you can also use toothpaste and a toothbrush which will clean And polish.
And another alternative is to buy one of the Gold & Silver polishing cloths that Wal-Mart sells in their jewelery dept's.
It is a bit slower, but is the least messy of all. The cloths last forever and the dirtier they get the better they seem to work. And I think the cost is a bit less than $5.00. These are what Barb and I use on our silverwork and I also use them on my khukuri's and otheer shiny metals.

Thanks for the tips guys. Man this HIKV is starting to hurt. It's now starting to mutate and include other sharp and pointy objects besides khukuris.

Bro the one that Spark said broke the forum last time was a new post and not a reply.
I just now searched the posts like Blues did the last time and it didn't show up in there either.
I will keep an eye out for that "unregistered poster" that came up the last time when things all went to hell in a hand basket.
