Tips for your BEST SHAVE!

I don't profess to know everything there is about shaving, and certainly some of what I'm going to say is against conventional wisdom (at least according to the Fag Five of Queer Eye fame). These are tips that have at least worked for me. Some of them are quite conventional, but since I'm going to be in a wedding party this Sat. I thought I'd share at least how I get a really good shave.

Like most things, a good shave starts with a good prep, which for me begins the DAY BEFORE the event. I skip shaving at least the morning of or better the day before an event if possible. I still have to work tomorrow, so I got a good shave in tonight. I won't shave until late Saturday morning, the day of the wedding. For what ever reason I get a MUCH better shave with a day and a half or two days growth.

Now some conventional wisdom, the Fag Five suggests shaving in the shower, and so do I. Bed, Bath and Beyond sells a reasonably priced mirror that works in the shower. There are some really elaborate "no fog" mirrors out there, the choice is yours.

More conventional wisdom. Use a facial scrub prior to the big shave, Neutragena and others are available at your local pharmacy and supermarket and they work well. I'm partial to Jack Black products, particularly their facial scrub and their Beard Lube (shaving cream). The last thing you do before exiting the shower is the shave.

O.K., now you're scrubbed, it's time for a shaving lubricant. I prefer shave oils and American Crew makes a very nice one that is very reasonably priced for the volume that you get. It's available at Ulta or try online. Use enough, but use it sparingly. Probably 10-20 drops is more than adequate (about 1 cc for the metrically inclinced). If your beard is especially thick, you may want to apply some "tube type" shaving cream such as Jack Black or Neutragena, but again, use it sparingly. You should still see your skin through the cream! You can use the cream over the oil, or just stick with the oil. This requires some experimentation.

Next, have at it. GO SLOWLY! I still go against the grain because I just can't get a really close shave going with the grain. Crossing the grain also works O.K., except for the neck. Again, this is very dependant on the individual. Conventional wisdom is to go with the grain to prevent ingrowns, but that doesn't work for me.

As far as razors are concerned, I'm a big fan of the powered Gilette multi-blade, and I prefer the new Fusion over the Mach 3 Turbo. I also use a new blade on the "day of the big shave", which most people agree with, but some reallly chintzy folks don't ;) (sorry VT).

Finally finish off with a shave balm or lotion. Again Jack Black makes some good stuff, but so does Neutragena and other "men's cosemetic companies".

Finally, if you want to try the Jack Black products, they are available at Nordstroms, or Nordstroms.com. A word of warning they are not cheap, and if your wife/financee/live-in/girlfriend gets ahold of it and starts using it for her legs it WILL DISAPPEAR FAST!

Anyway, that's what works for me. Anyone else who cares to share, chime in.

Heh. I just scrape the cheapest razors I can find at Wally World, with the cheapest shave cream I can find at Wally World, across my face every two days.

I'm a lazy slob. :D

the cheap %100 aloe products at wally world work great for me. also you don't need any water. just a cloth to wipe off what is left. the aloe makes your skin feel good also.

Interesting - I have found for years and a number of different razors that it seems to take a few shaves for me to get the blades to their "optimum" level - then they seem to last a long time in that condition - it's almost like the blades are "too sharp" for me when brand new and need some breaking-in.

I always start the shave down with the grain - then shave up against the grain, and I like the Edge type gel or their imitators.

My side-by-side (literally) long term testing of - Multi-Blade Razors goes into some detail.

Anyway here are some web tips for good shaves -

I've moved to the Merkur FUTUR, and love the ability to adjust from a 5 for my face to a 1.5-2 on my neck. Makes the daily ritual of Tie and Coat much easier on my neck.

unknown vt-

i have a similar experience. my wife uses those pink daisy twin blades. after she shaves her legs once with it, i grab it. i can shave 3 times with it before it's wore out. if i use a new razor once, it won't work again for me. weird but true.

My equipment and procedure:

...'Free' Gillette razor that came in the mail
...Gillette double-bladed Sensor replacement heads
...Barbasol (99 cent) can of shaving cream
...Ivory soap
...Warm water

Wash my face with Ivory soap (leave soapy mixture on face for a few minutes) & rinse with warm water. Apply cheap Barbasol shaving cream to bearded areas on face. Dilute the shaving cream on face with some warm water on hand. Go on the computer & visit BladeForums for about 4-5 minutes then go back to the bathroom and shave. Beard is softened tremendously and no 'tugging' of stubble!

All I know is that since I started using Origins "Blade Runner" shave cream and the fusion powered razor, I haven't cut myself once. No irritation either.

I've been using the same razor head for about 2 months too...

Just swung by origins and they have a new "mens pack" with a scrub, shave oil, aftershave lotion, shave cream and face wash in it. I'll have to pick that up, their stuff is great.

Get a good straight razor, badger hair brush, some shaving soap, and a strop and brace yourself for the closest shave of your life. Wash your face, splash it with warm, almost hot, water, lather up, and shave. Going with the grain, then across the grain works best for me. Make sure to keep the lather from drying out, and keep the razor wet. Once your done, splash some aftershave on your face (I use British Sterling). You can also wrap a hot towel on your face when your done (like they do in barber shops), but thats optional. Strop it before every shave and only shave every other day (otherwise you risk ruining the microedge, and its easier with some stubble). It takes some getting used to, you're pretty much guaranteed to cut your chin and the area right beneath your nose the first time you try, but once you learn to do it, you'll be happy you made the switch. A good razor will give you a ridiculously close shave and serve you and your decendants well for generations - the razor that I shave my face with also shaved that of my great, great grandfather.

If they were black, would you call them the Coon Five? If they were brown, would you call them the Spic Five? If your answer is no, perhaps you should consider that "fag" is a similar epithet. :thumbdn:

That would be true, except for the fact that these 5 guys revel in and celebrate their "queerness" - going so far as to become rich and famous from a show so named. This is quite different from those who seek to be judged by "the content of their character and not the color of their skin".

Shame on you for knowing the difference but pretending you don't.

Now, back to a good shave . . .

cheers

So by your logic, a TV show where the characters were black and celebrated their blackness should merit them being called the n-word? :jerkit:

Go ask a gay person if it's cool to call them a fag, or if, to them, it's hateful.

I don't want to detract from this thread's topic. I would prefer to get back to the shaving. But bigotry pisses me off, and it was the OP who used the word fag twice in his post. Bladeforums is too classy a place for this type of language.

Sometimes it is, and sometimes it isn't. It all depends on one's intent. If you don't know this, maybe you should stray from your comfort zone and watch an episode or two of Queer Eye. The Fab 5 call themselves all manner of words which aren't on your PC list, and when they do so I tend to believe they aren't being hateful with each other. Its because their intent is obviously harmless, just as marcangel's was.

cheers!

Do you guys really feel leaving shaving cream on your face for five minutes softens your beard ? Honestly I wash my face put barbasol on and shave . I will have to try that way and see . What about shaving soaps ? will that soften beard the same way ?

I have to use an electric razor...Otherwise, no-matter how I try to shave with a blade, my face & neck ends-up looking like it got into a fight with a chainsaw..

One tip I found that seems to help is to rinse with COLD water. As cold as you can get it. At first it's a shock, but after a day or two you find yourself wanting the water colder and colder. My water doesn't get cold enough. :) I rinse until I get my skin cold. This seems to help reduce irritation, razor bumps, etc. It shrinks the pores, reduces any swelling, can stop minor bleeding, etc.

Then I pat dry and finish with some good after shave balm.

Actually I just tried waiting about 2 minutes with the Jack Black beard lube the other day and it did improve the quality of my shave, quite a bit actually Five minutes may be a bit extreme, but if it's a special event maybe I would do it.

I like to dry shave with a razor that's been in rotation for at least two weeks.

Then I use rubbing alcohol as "after-shave"

Wakes you and my wife digs the medicinal smell...

YMMV,
Jax
