tips on drilling materials prone to cracking

I have some old stag scales that I am worried will crack when I am drilling pin holes. is there any techniques that can reduce the risk of me cracking the scales? thanks-calvin
 
And firmly hold down your work so it doesn't run up the brill bit. Some guys stick masking tape over the area the bit will exit, suppose to help.
 
Always use sharp bits when drilling brittle material.
Use the proper speed and pressure.
Use a backer board to support the break-out area.
Drill a smaller pilot hole and then drill from both sides to enlarge.
