Tips on getting a Emerson knife centered.

Good for you Joe. That would stink to not carry an Emerson because of that. That method IMO should be stickied to the top if it isn't already.

Agreed.
Blade-centering is very important to me and my own tweaks had the blade very tight. My fault for not taking the plunge earlier and disassembling the Emerson. Anyway, I'm glad I got everything straightened out -- now I cannot put my 7 down & I'm carrying two Emersons instead of one! The 7 and my Journeyman, the 7 and my Super Commander, etc.
It's like having a brand-new knife!

I just picked up an ETAK two weeks ago and tried centering the blade myself via the method described in this thread with no luck, I think I will send it to Emerson to see if they can fix it for me. Love the knife though and can't wait to carry it.

Most Emerson's appear to be off center because of the chisel ground blade. If it is off center it will appear a lot worse than it is.

I sent my Persian back to the shop because it was off center and had some side to side play in the blade when closed. Got it back within a week in perfect shape.

That one is off-center. The tip does sometimes throw your perception off, but looking down the sides of the liners is a dead giveaway on that one. Emerson will take care of you, though.

BTW, we're originally from Princeton in Mercer County. We get back as often as we can but not nearly often enough. We really miss the mountains. GA has been good to us, but once you've got Blue Ridge in your blood, it never goes away.

I'm having lunch at The Tamarack as I write this  I decided to make the drive down to Bluefield and visit Newgraham knives.

Both great places to visit. Been to Tamarack a couple of times and I get to NGK at least once a year. Good to see another mountain state member on BF.

Quick question. When loosening all the small phillips screws before loosening the pivot, do you loosen/unscrew them on both sides of the knife, or loosen them only on one side? I have a left handed CQC-7 that could use a bit of centering karma.

You should only have to unscrew both sides of the knife if it has a back spacer. If it has standoffs, only one side is necessary.

My lefty CQC-7 has standoffs, so I'll just unscrew one side and see if that centers things a bit better. Thanks!

I called Zmerson today and spoke with Rachael who explained that when one takes apart an Emerson the blade can lean if one does not put it together right.

Here is what she said.

I should loosen the grips screws until they are very loose but not falling out. Then loosen the pivot 1 1/2 times from where you wanted it. Then open the knife.

Now tighten the grip screws from bottom up and then tighten the pivot. Then close the blade.....IT WORKED!

Followed this to the letter and it worked like a charm on my mini commander.

Does this work with standoff models as well as backspacer models? Or does that not matter?

this thread inspired me to take my CQC-7A last nite (it was SLIGHTLY off center) and it worked like a charm....PERFECTLY centered. ive taken alotta knives apart in my time and the Emerson was by far the easiest to deal with. I love the fact that I don't need to use anything but a small phillips and a straight screwdriver for the pivot. I had some matching blue titanium standoffs and thumb disc so I went ahead and reassembled it with them. not exactly a "pimp job", but now it is somewhat personalized which makes me like it even more.

great read! i think i unknowlingly did what was mentioned and i managed to get it to open with the level of tightness to my liking.

THIS SHOULD BE STICKIED!!!
