I built the forge room to keep the fire out of the barn but, I guess you just can't get around the fates. No one was hurt in this mess. No one was even in this shop when it started, I was in the hot shop around the corner. We just sucked in a bunch of smoke putting it out. Between the fire extinguishers and a barn hose we (Tess and I) pretty much had it out before the fire trucks arrived. I must be a real knifemaker, the first thing I did after emptying the extinguishers and handing Tess the hose was to grab all my patterns off the wall, so I only lost one or two. Fortunately, the fire was contained to this one wall. Not sure yet what caused it, it was either the breaker box or the welder. We'll find out this week. Most of the machines are alright, just lost a couple and a bunch of sandpaper, some handle supplies and other various "stuff" (that one drawer had all my stabilized wood. :(

Everyone make sure to check your extinguishers and such just to be on the safe side. This seems to have been an unpreventable accident "they say" but, do your best to be safe. Alot of us are trying to stay warm working in the cold winter but, this ain't the way to do it.

Well...thats sucks! Glad nobody was hurt and that you didn't lose too much. Hope no one gets sick after all the smoke, thats a lot for your lungs too take.

That's unfortunate. I'm glad you got it out OK, and that the damage was not worse.
In the top photo, there is, what looks like a heater, under the red vise, with a rag on top of it. Could that thing have been accidentally switched on by a collision with a passing foot??

Darn J., real sorry that happened. Glad you were close by so it couldn't get out of hand.

Shucks, there go the great sheath prices.:(

J. I'm glad to hear you and Tess are ok, stuff can be replaced easily, you two can't. This should probably be a reality check for us all to at least give our shop a once over safety check...and your suggestion of fire extinguishers is a good one...I've only got one, been meaning to buy two more, I think I will now. Again, I'm glad you two are fine and you didn't lose more stuff.

No prices are going up Roger, we've got good business insurance so that's no trouble. ;) And thank goodness no customer orders were damaged. One in particular, I had just finished that morning and brought up to the house, I really wouldn't have wanted to start over on. This hopefully will only put me back a couple weeks.
:D

The item your looking at Mike is a mig welder. The cloth on top of it are welding sleeves. I checked that once everything was out and it was turned off. Unless it was something internally. Right now it looks like the breaker.

I had two extinguishers and I'll be putting three in when things get redone. Can't have too many of those I've learned.

Very glad no one was hurt, and think this is convining me to go pick up another extinguisher this week, just to be on safe side.

GLad you two are alright though and nothing more was damaged/lost

when I saw 'tis the season for a fire
man sorry to hear that,,,,
I just knew what you were going to say:(
thank goodness it wasn't as bad as I was thinking it could have been.
think of it as a heads up.
you were very lucky and you have blessings to count J...

It was bad, but could have been terrible! Boy you and Tess have a wonderful positive attitude about getting going again. You will make success. The very best of the Christmas season to you both. Frank

Glad no one was hurt J. Sucks any time of year but is particularly bad right now. At least the damage was minimal. You seem to be taking it like a man and that's what separates us from the Yuppies!
Yell if you need anything!

Of course you know I was only kidding about the sheath pricing but I do know one thing: I really should get a couple extinguishers.

RL

sorry to hear it J&Tess. thank god you were able to take care of it.
good luck with the repairs
*note to self: first item to buy for the shop; Extinguisher

Damn, glad no one got hurt. That really bites the big one. Let me know if I can help you guys with anything.

J and Tess,
Sure glad you guys are ok. You're right about the fire extinguishers. Everyone needs to check them.
If I can do anything, let me know.

Boy, that really BLOWS! And right here at Christmas time too.
I'll bet you're glad you had the "before" photo for insurance purposes and also to see how to put things back in case you forgot any of the details.
Good luck getting back on track.

As mentioned glad no-one was hurt and the loss was small...thanks for sharing, never thought of it before but I'm going to spread a couple smoke detectors around the shop, might give me a little warning. Couple more extinguishers won't hurt either...

J I'm sure glad it wasn't any worse than it was and that no one was hurt. You do have a great attitude. One thing for sure, I am convinced now I'm going to add several fire extinguishers to my shop!

I've always been a believer in fire bottles, after seeing that now more than ever. I'm sorry to see such damage, but glad it wasn't worse than it could have been and no one was hurt.

I work part time in my shop and when I'm gone for a couple of days or to the rig for a couple of weeks I unplug and shut down the power to be on the safe side.

That Also gives me the incintive to clean my shop up, to many fire hazards floting around!
