I have a Kershaw 1725SG2, the ball detent is flat a has worn a grove onto the blade. Kershaw says it can't be fixed due to lack of parts. Any ideas before I send it back for a different knife? Will this affect the life of the knife?

care to offload it? i dont know if you could fix it, i know kai probably wont

Boy, someone had flipperitis :D. Try contacting a few knifemakers perhaps? I know some that repair their own knives detent balls, so I assume it is possible.

One of mine has the same problem. Im looking for a !/16th inch ceramic ball to try. Its been that way for quite a while just makes it harder to flip not really a big deal knife is still useable.

Well, the first question I have is whether or not the detent still works. If so, then great. If not, then you could have someone drill through where the detent ball is from the outer side of the lock bar, knock that old ball out and press in a new one. :D Steely is correct, there are people who do this.

it has a hole clear through already just need a pin to drive it out

Thanks for the reply's. Knife was bought knew. I noticed a grinding noise when I brought it home. Took the knife apart and noticed a groove on the blade and a flat detent. Looked at this one for a while before pulling the trigger on it. wanted something to supplement my 0560.

Maybe ,I need to do some more research though. I was going to get the ZrO2 (zirconium Oxide) balls but im afraid they might cut a channel being as hard as they are so maybe the silicone ones you found might be better thanks for the link

Tom Krein has always been very cordial in all questions I have had. I bet him or Lucas Burnley would be happy to answer what kind of detent balls they use or would recommend.

Don't let someone do this! It is Ti and I'm nearly certain the detent is steel. You should be able to disolve it in acid with no impact on the titanium then seat a new detent ball.
No need for a hole on the other side and keeps the factory look. I'd ask someone more knowledgable if this would work for sure.

If you can knock it out of the existing hole without drilling or doing this then even better.

they are already drilled thru from the factory

Well I didn't know that, ya pack of jerks. I thought they would be, but given how the situation was presented it seemed like there wasn't a pass through hole.

*Makes obscene gesture with hands*

I will not forget this rudeness. You will both pay!

The exact same thing happened to me as well. I'm in the process of repairing my Ti JYD. I have a few ceramic 1/16 ball bearings on the way. I'll let you all know how it goes. Goatsfoot, if my repair goes well I can certainly help you out as well. The detent ball is steel and it is easily knocked out from the other side. No need to drill it out.

yeah I had this happen to 2 Ti/SG2 JYDs in a row. But the weird thing is, if you just keep flipping it they may wear back in and get smooth again. the first one it happened to I gave away and the new owner had it slick again after a few hundred flips. The second one I knocked out the flat detent ball, smacked a new one and held it in place with JB Weld, and . . . . it just wore a deeper groove in the blade steel making the action gritty something awful -- but then after several hundred flips it smoothed out too. Not optimal smoothness but functional. Back when he moderated here Thomas said they had several problems with the softness of the blade steel and/or detent balls on these models.

Someone remind me what blade steel the SG2 is laminated with.
My JYD was flawless for a good long time. I never noticed any grittyness or any lack of smoothness. And then one day... it just became VERY gritty instantly, and almost impossible to flip. Perhaps the detent bearing shifted in it's socket, although I think that unlikely. Can't explain it. You could even hear it grinding. I wouldn't be surprised if the knife is still un-smooth after a detent replacement. The new ball will have to wear a new path into the blade. But eventually it would improve. Wearing a deep enough groove along the entire path on the blade, to the point where it will become an issue, will take a long time. It's just alot of material that will need to be removed. The tiny detent ball, on the other hand, will wear down in no time unless a harder material is used. I don't want a repeat of the same problem, so ceramic it is! :p

My JYD SG2 is also having that worn detent problem. I still have a little bit of detent ball life left but it seems that it may need replacing soon. Let me know how it works out for you, I will want to change the detent ball on mine too.

When mine got gritty, I had put some grease in it to help smooth it out. It has worked so far...
