Well I have to say that my JYD is good as new.
I did notice that it wasn't as smooth as it was before the problem arose. But I must have flipped the thing 1000 times by now and it has since returned to it's original smoothness. The detent retention itself is much better too. I did not expect the knife to be smoother with the ceramic ball, and it's not. It just seems to be at least as smooth as it was. Pressing in the Ceramic ball isn't difficult at all. In fact, I'd suggest that you simply press it in as best you can by hand, perhaps with pastic end of a pen, and then re-assemeble the knife. Then once the knife is together you can press the ball further, if need be, by pressing on the lockbar while the detent bearing is against the blade. I did not used JB weld, although I considered it for a while, because if ceramic turned out to be a poor choice it could be easily removed.
I do notice a thin narrow "channel", for lack of a better word, being pressed into the blade. I say "pressed" because I don't think the metal is being scraped or being ground away, since the flouro grease I'm using to lubricate the detent is not turning grey. Rather I think the soft metal is deforming, rather than being removed. Nevertheless, the "channel" is very shallow. The top of the detent bearing is sitting about 25 thou above the lockbar surface. The bearing itself is around 62 thou in diameter, 1/16th of an inch, so it is set around 37 thou deep in the hole. That channel is a LONG way from being 25 thou deep. So I don't see excessive wear being a problem. Still, I don't claim to be an expert. Only time will tell for sure how it turns out in the long term, but so far I'm seeing consistency, which is a good sign in my opinion.
I'd be happy to replace the detent ball for any of you guys. I only have 2 on hand. PM me and we could work something out.
