Titanium milling with a grip

I love titanium scales like most but have been disappointed in the lack of grip on them. I’ve found with most I’ve handled that the milling is usually aesthetically appealing but doesn’t actually provide any functional grip.

I’ve just recently started collecting odkw’s and for the first time the milling provides an excellent grip for use. Which is really satisfying in completing the whole package of not just looking good but functionally serving a purpose. And a good grip on a knife has always been important to me.

So I’m curious what titanium knives yall have found that has milling that not only looks good but actually serves the purpose of providing an excellent grip. Pictures are a must! Let’s see um!!

Here’s a few I’ve found that are grippy as hell.

While it doesn’t look like much, those deep grooves really allow your fingers to dig in.

My only LG with a grip. Great pattern and spacing provides an excellent grip.

So far the best grip I’ve felt on any ti knife I’ve handled. My middle finger sits right in the hole in the center of the scale. The ridges of the circles provides great gip for the rest of my fingers. I can confidently say this knife is as or more grippy than any of my peel ply g10 knives or any other knife I’ve handled.

I dont need the carvings and cutouts to get a good grip on titanium handles. its just the shape of the handle and size that matters to me. even if smooth im good long as shape and size of handle allows for a solid grip.

dont mind them though from a decorative stance.

Yeah for sure. I have a bunch of smooth sided Ti that just locks in.

I don’t disagree, the handle shape overall is the most important but when the milling does add to the grip it’s a significant improvement in locking the knife in the hand. Especially sweaty hands.

And I’m not a stabby fellow but when judging the grip of a knife I do take into consideration how much I would trust it in having to stab something. I do have concerns about ti knives with smooth scales with or without milling regardless of comfort in hand. I have little to no concerns with g10 or ti scales when the milling gives additional grip.

And just to be clear, I probably haven’t ever stabbed anything but I appreciate the added security of additional grip if I ever got in a tussle with a tire for example. 😂

Oh yeah. I like functional machining. Not so much the glamour/decorative patterns. Handle shape and size with the nice corrugations is a winner.

Some makers just get access to a machine and start using it without really thinking about form follows function.

I agree, I find most milling on ti scales is for looks rather than purpose driven which is unfortunate. Most patterns would provide added grip if they just milled them deeper.

I’ve still yet to ever handle a textured ti hinderer or the ti dgg strider but both look like they would actually provide a great grip. Really just curious what else is out there that does as well.

On that note, Mitch, the DGG Striders are extremely grippy, especially the older ones. The Hinderer textured TI scales add a bit of grip, but I wouldn’t call them grippy. With the Striders, they can also be very rough on your pockets and not always willing to come out smoothly.

TRM does a good job with the lizard texture. Imgur seems to have changed yet again so I'm working on a pic. Grippy but not too aggressive. I can only pass a link with media. I'm on mobile though.

Thanks for the info. If I ever get a strider it’ll definitely be a ti dgg. Not to surpised to hear that about the hinderer.

This LG myna is a perfect example of an excellent handle design for comfort and locking in but the diamond texturing adds little to nothing on the grip. It looks great and is one of my favorite of his milling patterns but unfortunately is for looks only.

I'm surprised that pattern adds nothing. It's pretty well just like the checkering you'll see on firearm grips.

Same here, I was really expecting it to have a great grip but I think the diamonds may be too small or the tips of them have been rounded too much. Or maybe the milling just isn’t deep enough.

I've been thinking of sending my slick handled titanium knives somewhere and having the scales milled with some pattern. World of Knives maybe?

This was a PJ stonewash. Had them put the laser to it. It's not slick but I wouldn't call it grippy either. But I also had the flats laser polished so kind of a tit for tat on grip.
