Titanium or stainless container for kit

I currently carry a kit in a waterproof bag while hunting and hiking. I am looking for a small (twice as big as an Altoids can) pot or container to carry it in. It needs to be waterproof (not necessarily submersible, just rain proof) with a tight sealing lid, and able to boil water (kinda ironic). It would be nice if it were around $20, so that may exclude many titanium containers.

look for something called the bcb mini mess tin.

i believe that will fit your bill.

Alas not stainless but I just came across the below. As it is steel plated with tin it strikes me as a conventional tin can only thicker. If I had to boil water in it at a pinch it wouldn't bother me but I can see why you'd like something else if you're gonna do it a lot.

Anyway, I know nothing about these guys I just stumbled across them -

I guess this one is about twice the capacity of a altoids tin http://www.campingsurvival.com/2ozmetinwicl.html

but this one looks like it would be more useful for water / food http://www.campingsurvival.com/mesicosctopt.html

I just googled that and I think you meant the bcb mini mess box.
the mini mess tin set is basically a British Army mess tin set, useful but not even slightly waterproof.

not bad...

After jumping through this hoop more than a couple times, I think waterproofing the contents is easier. You can use Aloksaks inside a metal container, or a Seal-A-Meal to wrap your own components to put in a kit. That way you can use a mess kit or regular hiking pot for the container. With the Seal-A-Meal, you can vacuum bag your whole tin. Keep in mind that there are degrees of waterproofing-- think about what level you want to trust your life with.

IMHO, the least expensive and most bombproof kit is to use a Nalgene with the GSI pot, or the wide mouth Guyot stainless water bottle. That way you get a waterproof container and a way to purify by boiling. It gives a larger kit container that fits many pack pockets and has holsters and slings available too. The GSI pots are $6 or so and Nalgenes are $8 or so on sale. I've bought them at yard sales for $0.25! The Guyot bottles are a little over your budget at $23.

If we could get enough people together, H2GO makes a 40 ounce stainless bottle sold by the promotional type sites for ~$10 each buying 50 at a time. We could have them laser engraved with a survival forum message or logo. http://www.lazerdesigns.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=WB40W&Affiliate=shopping

Tins are fine for a pocketable kit of small items. It is just a means of organizing a bunch of small items and keeping the size and weight to a set limit. It's easy to get stuck in a rut with them.

If you want a good tin, I like the Sigg "snack box." They are anodized aluminum. Sigg says they aren't for cooking, but I chalk that up to the fact that they have rubber bumpers on the latches-- something you wouldn't care about in Survival Land. The lid does have a seal.
