Titanium Prybars and Marlin Spikes

bottle opener/prybar on one end, and a sharpened kiridashi-type edge on the other.
a little bit of a kydex sheath that can cover either end depending on which one you're using, which doubles as some type of handle.
I gather the titanium piece is going to be somewhat on the thin side, right?

Sounds cool, I have tried the sheath/handle idea, it works pretty well. I started a prybar with 2 ends but I didn't like the feel of it, I'll have to keep working on the design.

Thin... yes it is; .090 which is about 3/32.

Nah, no sharp edges on a spike. Not for shackel spikes anyways. When I climb out to the end of a 17' spinnaker pole to do a peel, I don't want to accidently catch my changing stop with the sharp edge. I only have one hand to trip the old guy and don't hav time to make sure a cover is on the blade. I carry a knife to cut when I need it, and a spike when I need it. Trying to combine the two hasn't proved to be successful over the years. Now a bottle opener is a great idea. Maybe a pry bar end as well, but I don't think I would ever use it.

Lots of features I would like o see in a spike.

Your input is invaluable! :D Thanks!

Daniel, some other ideas for your spike. First, a bottle opener on the end. I think the claw type would work, but if you did a oval cut out that still leaves you the end to do something else with. Second, maybe something to make it a little bit fatter or easier to index in your hands when wearing gloves and your hands are cold. I need to know what I am grabbing by feel sometimes. Third, some way to keep it from laying flat, like a pin or bolt that goes through it. I wear full finger gloves and picking up a thin piece of metal off a flat surface would be difficult. Fourth, I don't see any way to keep it in a sheath, maybe a small guard like projection or a contoured grip profile.

These are just some suggestions, it is your design to do as you wish with it. I think you can have a very good spike with just a little tweaking. I will be ordering a knife spike combo from you one of these days, hopefully sooner than later.

I was describing the prybar. The marlinspike/marline spike is better as a standalone, I agree.

Well that makes more sense to me now! I could see that working on a pry bar.

Not sure how hard an oval cutout would be to do ,as a bottle opener, but sounds great.

To keep the bar from lying flat, and being difficult to pick up off a flat surface,I'd suggest this: instead of an oval 'cutout',how about an oval 'bend-down'?

i.e.: Cut out the C the right OD to use as an opener, but instead of cutting out the inner side (ID) of the C,just bend it down slightly.....voila! instant integral spacer!

Hope this makes sense?!? and I'm not sure if it's doable, but ya'll will know! :cheerful:

Alternative: put a regular 'claw' opener in the side of the prybar; use the opening of the 'claw' to secure the 'bar in the kydex, using a small loop of shockcord?

(Don't buy any,Daniel! I have ~75' of shockcord,in basic black) :encouragement:

Gnar I have been thinking about this a bit more. Here is one way to do it while taking care of the flatness.

And here is what the oval cut out looks like and how it works. This one is credit card sized and fits in my wallet.

As for the claw type, think about what a SAK has or a leatherman tool.

More good stuff!

Very good point about picking up the marlinspike! Maybe a lanyard or ring through the end would be cool.

Great ideas for the bottle openers too!
