Titanium has a grain, just like steel. There will be less chance of a lock failure of you always cut out the lock side with the grain going length ways. Some of the Titanium I purchase does not have the grain marked. If you will spray it with WD-40, the grain will show up.

I might as well answer this one now, cause I know it's coming.

Tom, just in the way it's rolled. The markings go the same direction as the "grain" and it just makes them work better. I asked a number of titanium specialists about it years ago when I started making liner locks.

I never buy titanium that isn't marked for two reasons - I want to know the grade, and it's easier to get the grain direction.

It works for A T and me.

so when i cut the ti and get 8 sides one way and then the left over piece is going the other way i should just throw it away???? i guess i could use those pieces for the left handed side....but ive never seen any grain in the stuff and mostly i buy 1 ft sqs and have no idea...plus....ive never had any problem with the locks failing....are you saying the springiness is not there if the grain is going up and down instead of lengthwise????? and that they lose their set??

Yes, there is a grain. Like I said, spray some liquid on the Titanium. Then use a paper towel to dry it off. As you are drying it off, you will see it.

As far as that odd piece you mentioned, I would use it for the solid side. Kit told me that there was less chance of the Titanium loosing it tension over the years. The way I look at it, why take a chance?

Is all this important? It is to Kit and me.
