The label on my new snow peak titanium single walled cup says do not put over a open flame or deformation may occur. Is this true? I wanted it for emergency water boiling use. Thanks.

I suspect they mean don't put it over open flame while it's empty.

Boiling water should be fine and I've actually burned the bottom of a Trek 700 and all it did was heat anodize the bottom of the cup.

The new stuff may be made of slightly thinner Titanium but I can't really see it as being so thin that it'd cause problems.

Plus, a deformed Titanium cup will still boil water. :)

Quick tip... single wall cups are a heck of a lot easier to drink out of if you put a silicone wrist band (inspirational message of your choice) around the rim. It insulates just that portion and keeps you from burning your lower lip on the hot metal. The weight increase is negligible. For my larger Snowpeaks, I put a couple of extra stretchy o rings on the rim. Works like a charm.

Pro tip!

Sweet tip, tenkara, thanks! Love hot coffee, hate burned lips

I've read several places you shouldn't cook over an open fire with titanium.

I cooked with my buddy's titanium over a low fire and it permanantely discolored it but it didn't crack.

I am guessing that if a emergency situation in the woods came up, I would be ok as long as I was careful and not using it extensively.

Really?

I've cooked over a fire with mine several times and never had a problem save that one time I let the cup run dry.

Actually I set mine in the coals more than over a flame so I wonder if that's the difference.

Maybe what I heard was wrong?:thumbup:

Nah, I'm curious now. I need to look into this.

I don't remember any of my SnowPeak stuff coming with a warning about use with an open flame but I'm going to grab my 2008 catalog and see what they say.

when heated in the presence of oxygen titanium will anozide quite quickly which will build up a microscopic film of titanium oxide which distorts light and makes it change colors, so heating over an open flame will cause this, more so than heating it nestled in some hot coals. no structural damage to the Ti though i dont believe

Alright, it's actually the 2007 catalog but there is nothing in there warning about use over an open flame.

I don't still have my paperwork on any of my Titanium pieces but I'll make a call to my buddy Steve who runs the local outdoor store and see if he can find something on one of the new Ti mugs.

Which cup is it you've got?

Makes it look cool too.

Mine turned blue and purple. :D

I'm sure the tag on mine said discolouration rather than deformation ?

Iv boiled water in my snow-peak cup and the flame just changed the cup to a blue/purple and gold coulour.

I would rather and usually use my steel pot for water boiling but at that time I only had my cup.

Here's a post regarding the discoloration AND deformation:

EDIT: There is some first-hand experience with deformation in that thread but it seems to be just one guy. The others have had discoloration issues only. I'd be interested to hear the extent of the deformation and will now start really pushing my Trek 700 to see if I can't get something other than discoloration.

Having boiled water over an open flame in a paper cup, I wouldn't worry too much about titanium.
If there's residual stress from drawing it could warp when it's heated up, but as others have mentioned, it's not a problem if there's water in it. As long as the cup is full, it can't get hotter than the boiling point of what's in it, which is well under titanium's annealing temperature.

I have a vargo cup, that has been placed in coals, over flames on a rack, and on a charcoal grill to heat. The cup has not cracked, but it is black. I have used it in this manner for 2 years or so. This cup came with a lid, and the lid still fits tight, so the cup is not warped.
