Yesterday was the first run of my NWG, and it was AWESOME!!!. I went with step pulleys. The low setting is around 800 sfpm if I did the math right. Perfect for fine grit finish work. The highest speed is somewhere around terrifying, and really eats steel.

I still need to break it down for paint,to locktite all the nuts and bolts, and I'm going to plug the ends of the square tube. I did the build for about $280.00 Of course I only have the flat platen for now.
tmickley deserves a big a:thumbup: for this set of planes.

The skull's crack me up. I am just getting ready to paint one my 14yr old son and I built. I will have to show him the skull deco.
What did you use for wheels?

The skulls are leftovers from medallions I have made to go on my Harley.

The drive wheel is from you (tmickley) but the tracking wheel and 2 small idler wheels are laminated wood. It took a few attempts to get an accurate bearing pocket in the turned wood wheels, but they run very smooth now.
For the doubting folk wood turning lathes turn at much higher rpm's than a grinder.
The knobs for the set screws are made from my failed wood wheels.
some other modifications. I widened the base tube for the pillow blocks to 8" by splitting a piece of 4" tubing and welding it to each side. (first attempt at welding) The base tube was increased from 1/8" wall thickness to 1/4" Because thats what I found.
I add a nut made from self lubricating bronze bushing stock on the idler wheel bolts.
