To all of the ZT 0550 owners!

haha loving my 0550... not a big "whoop" for me with the new deep pocket carry imo. i personally thought it rode deep enough already.

KLJTech: I think the new version of the 0550 should be coming fairly soon because many dealers are reducing the price of the original 0550 to make room for the newer model. I'm sure Thomas will let us know when the new models will be available.

Thanks, sounds good...getting a marked down current version 0550 sounds like a deal too.

Appreciate the insight, perhaps someday we'll start to understand our own business.

Well, my 0551 had to make two trips to the factory for these imaginary problems I have and it was never truly fixed. I'm guessing the plethora of threads on the lock issues between the 0550 and 0560 mean nothing either?

Surprising is the attitude towards customers that don't fall into the blind fanboy category.

Knifenut: Your really bringing some unwanted negativity into this thread all I wanted was to discuss the new 0550 model and see some cool pictures.

wow... lets get the topic back on track.
got bored of the 0550 again, i didnt plan on taking pics but i did this today during lunch at the office :)

There are problems with the 0560 lock. I called and complained (they've received other complaints) about the aggressive jimping in the wrong places (near the flipper) and the detent being too strong.

I have to hold my fingers way to the side of the framelock, especially since I'm left handed and the framelock is on the wrong side for a lefty (see lefty Sebenza).

If I ever had to pull it quickly & open it I might drop the knife be unable to open it (my fingers pushing down on the detent. When open it's great except for hard cutting --- the jimping cuts into your thumb.

I returned mine and bought a Contego for half the money and a xxxxx (haven't made up mind) with the other half. The Contego, which some say has too many hot spots is so much easier to open and use with no hot spots so far --- they ave evidently reduced the jimping and the G-10 has not been an issue yet.

Nice try (I mean that; but it's no X18) but KISS --- that's often Spyderco's recipe for success. Also, use over looks.

P.S. I really like ZT. My 350TS is really nice. And half the price. I might get a ZT 200.

No, it cuts into YOUR thumb, not mine. I cant stand when people buy an overbuilt folder and complain that it is overbuilt, or too tough for thier hands. Either dont buy an overbuilt folder, or dont have girl hands. Id hate for ZT to pussy down the jimping because some people cant handle it. In the mud or water that tough jimping can come in real handy. Hell, its handy with clean dry hands.

I don't get low ride, why would you want to make it harder to grab the knife? Maybe I'm missing something here?

And a weaker detent really makes no sense. The only good I see here is the lock cut-out being reversed, maybe that will fix the lock problems.

Weaker detent? How much weaker? That could seriously be a deal-killer...

I don't have an attitude towards anyone here good or bad. If you feel I do then that's on you.

I get my eyes rolling with generalities, you know, like with your posts here. Try to think bigger than BF's, it helps with perspective.

There are problems with the 0560 lock.
In general there are not.

simplespeed,

I have very strong hands and could probably beat you in an arm wrestle but that doesn't matter a whit. Or you would win. Overbuilding for the sake of overbuilding is not OK (they're not needed on this folder there) --- not when ergonomics are impaired. If I worked with my hands all day I don't know if that would make hard use of the 560 easier or harder. Hinderer's X-18 uses less aggressive jimping (rounded off instead of sharp, boxy jimping in a place where it's not even needed). The X18 is also a smoother opener because of the strong detent. In this case, it's just marketing.

The 0560 is a very nice knife and very innovative; it is tactical and I would need to open it fast and surely.

Oh, try using it with your left hand, including opening via the flipper and opening via the thumbstud on both sides. And what about the women on the forum? Don't you like them with soft hands?

Probably true, but as I said the lock is on the wrong side for lefties (including me) and Chris Reeves does his lefty frame locks (he only invented them) on the other side.

Best

The girls in the office open 0560's regularly without problems, and I know I can beat them in arm wrestling. :)

I've said more than once, ZT is not for everyone. For most it's too big, too weighty, and doesn't apply to their everyday. To us and those that need this style of product, they're perfect.

Have no clue what you mean with your marketing comment.

He brought up the soft hands insult, not I. To disagree with me is fine. Maybe being a lefty has something to do with it. And I just said I have the ZT350, am considering the ZT200 (7.7 ounces or more),
and use the Contego just fine (the "aggressive" G-10 people complain about is just fine with me). But I didn't start the macho/insult contest here. Why allow him to make it one with "girly" hands comments? There's no need.

Best.

I guess my fortune isn't as good as others. I never had a problem with my 0551 - other than the closed blade centering being a function of blade pivot tightening. Just right tightness = perfect centerung. Love the ElMax steel - part of the reason I bought a second 0551 over a 0550 (The other part being that the 0551 was less, locally, than the 0550!). I, too, found the jimping's inside edges a bit too sharp for my taste on my 0561 - and eased them in minutes with a few nail boards from my wife's stash - problem solved. The clips look and behave fine, for me, where they are now - removed and in their boxes! I guess you could say that I like really deep pocket carry. BTW, what lock problem... seriously? And... the ball detent lock seems identical in both 0551s and my 0561 - just 'enough'.

As this thread is about the new 0550 due out later this year... isn't it to have the ElMax blade steel? Carbon Fiber scale? My 0551s represent my favorite ZT model. I'll look over the new one when it arrives. I prefer the manual openning 0551s over the flipper 0561 and especially over my largest moose of a knife - my first ZT - my 0301 with it's assisted feature. Odd how perspective works... the 0551 appears smallest, the 0561 next, and the 0301 the largest. It's the length - 3 5/8" to 3 15/16" cutting edge length - and blade's shape/width - the stock thickness is the same! Any way you look at these ZTs, they are well made serious knives. Mine, especially the 0551, has done yeoman service here, whether opening the mail - or performing it's most serious task to date - making my lunch - a tomatoe sandwich! I may try to whittle an Adirondock chair from a tree stump one day with my 0301...

OK, well most like the lock on the 560 so I'm in the minority. Maybe because I'm left handed, had one with a stronger than average detent, or just less dexterous than average. So be it.

I called Chris Reeve Knives and they told me I wasn't crazy --- that a left handed model should have the frame lock on the other side as they do it.

Just watched a youtube video and ZT had decided their jimping on the 560 is too aggressive and either is toning it down now or will soon do so.

Best.

P.S. It is overall a great folder.

I bought a 550 and thought that I wanted a flipper. But the flipper is longer, bigger, and apparently sometimes a bit difficult for some folks. My 0550 is smooth, easy to open and close, the jimping is excellent. An excellent knife.
