Im about to buy a Starmate. Just about everything i have heard about this knife is positive. My question is: Has anyone abused this knife yet just to find its limits, or how far it can last under extreme conditions.
I sometimes do that to knives, but i wont harm this one. All i really want to know is how tough this knife really is. Any other coments are welcome as well. Thanks!

Dan,

You better check out review threads or look at some old issues of Blade. I don't think too many Starmate owners are going to purposely destroy their knives. Not only is the Starmate expensive, it is also fairly hard to find depending on where you live. I really don't think destroying thr knife would prove anything anyway. The Starmate's construction is very similar to the Military's, and I'm sure you would agree that the Military is plenty tough. Unless you intend to pull Lynn Thompson/Cold Steel type stunts with your knife, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

anthony,

Thanks for your comment. However, Im not the type to be pulling stunts with knives--especially this one! I realize what kind of a knife the Starmate is. And i know most knife lovers wouldnt even think of abusing it. There are people out there who do this--just trying to snag one, ok. Im a new member and the Starmate is relativly new too. So, im just trying something out here.

I was talking to Roger at www.knifeworks.com
yesterday and he said he had some Starmates coming in Thursday.Give him a call at 1-888-225-9775 and he should have one at a
reasonable price. And while you are on his web site be sure to register for the San Mai Trailmaster he is giving away on the 29th.

Sorry, but I bought the last one Roger (KnifeWorks) had yesterday. He did say he just might get one more, so you'd better call to get your name on it.

I have both the Military and the Starmate in 440V. I have two Militaries in 440V. If blade metal is the issue in terms of performance, then I think you can expect it to give you good performance for a long time. As to blade grind, since the Military is flat-ground vs. the Starmate's hollow ground, then it will depend where you'll use (abuse, heaven forbid) it.

Both have different design and function. The Starmate is designed to be more of a defensive knife than utility, so I doubt if there will be a lot who will abuse it utility-wise, just to see how well it will fare. But the performance of the blade steel should be the same with the Military's, which counts for a lot.
