To Bader or KMG?

Fitzo,

DARN NICE looking grinder you put together there. I like. I recognise that table. I have my Coote on one like that. Works pretty well doesn't it.

You KMG guys are top notch.

I use the rotary platen all the time, for more than convex grinds. It's one of the best things you can have for shaping handles or any other complex curve. That is one attachment that is worth its price any day.

I have a B III that I bought about 4 years ago. Set up with the tooling and rests, and 1.5 hp variable speed it cost about $2000. The same setup from Rob is about $1700 and his rests are far and away better than the little crap that came with my B III. There is no doubt my next machine will be a KMG.

Edited to add: Don't mess around with a weenie 1.5 hp - get at least 2 hp. I never thought I'd lug my motor but tapering tangs it's easy to kill it.

I must have the exact same setup as you, Dave. Although I never have lugged down my motor (I must have a lighter touch), I have had to get into the board and make some adjustments to the IR torque and current limiting. The Bader is a good machine, but in my opinion other than the main casting, its quite similar to the KNG in performance. One thing is certain: My next machine will be a KMG. ;)

KMG, KMG, KMG

I have the 8" contact wheel, custom adjustable platen with a 2" contact wheel, small wheel attachment with 1/2", 3/4", 1" wheels.

I also have a magic, special issue, 20" contact 'wheel' made special by Rob. Makes a really WILD hollow grind.

Rob's new platen is the easiest setup to switch from platen to slack belt you're gonna find.

Point is, the KMG/Rob Frink combo is the most versatile machine you'll ever get.

man....I may get the large contact wheel down the road since I only flat gring at this point.

I can get belts with that money....
Man....I need a bigger shop though.......

My option now is...get a bigger building or get the grinder.....

here is what my shop is at the moment.

See room for a new grinder

;) :D

I think I see a MAJOR problem Brian. It's too clean in your shop. You need a layer about 2" deep of ash and metal dust on all the horizontal surfaces to be an efficient knife shop. Get the grinder and build more knives to get a bigger building.

Its so clean.....your right! I was making sheaths there last week...Yep I bit the bullet!!! and now I cuss leather and steel......

I was thinking of making knives to pay for a building too Mark.

We must have the same wiring ;)

:D :D :D

My new shop is clean....and still unpacked...:(

Hopefully tomorrow....

Rlinger....

What type of table do you have yours on?
