To Bic or not to Bic? That is the question...

Yes it has been discussed to death.... but as I posted in another thread..

"I have to be honest and say that I don't carry a lighter don't use lighters and don't own a lighter. (I do have a BBQ lighter somewhere in the kitchen but my wife uses that for candles and the like) That's just my choice... For me they are unnecessary.... it's all good:thumbup:"
Rick

It helps that I'm not a smoker.;)

Little baby Bics allllll over the place. Put an o-ring around/under the fuel lever so it won't empty itself. I like Crickets as they are longer for easier grip and enough length to wrap a duct tape supply on. Add a safety pin under the duct tape for a lanyard ring.

Then carry a couple other kinds of fire starter, including a fire steel. C Thy A :)

Regular size Bic's stashed all over the place. Two in my PSK. I'm a pipe smoker, and not being able to light my pipe is an emergency!

Doans mag block in kit also.

i also don't smoke, but find bics very helpful... i have some in my PSK's, my car, my pack and various other spots.....

I carry bics, large and small. Hardly ever without one. I am a smoker and a blue cloud follows me wherever I go. People fall dead around me from the second hand smoke, but I just keep on puffing. But I can strike fire with steel and flint, or by rubbing two boy scouts together. My only concern is running out of tobacco in the wilderness and going on a nicotine habit rampage killing and maming small innocent animals. Naw, I'm not into smoking mushrooms, thanks.:D

To Bic or not to Bic?

Why in the world would you not? They are easy to use with one hand, they work 99% of the time, they are cheap, plentiful and durable. I can't think of one good reason you wouldn't carry one every where you go. Chris

I Bic , I'm also a smoker , but keep a couple extras for Justin Case . I've a couple more water proof fire starters in my bag , but , I figger the easiest way to start a fire is the best ;)
Been getting better with sparks and tinder and that makes me feel better, Waterproof matches are 2nd , and mag / spark is 3rd if I needed a fire in an emergency.
Lots of tinder in my bag as well

Phil

I am slowly moving away from Bics in favor of the peanut style lighters. They have o-rings, so they are waterproof, and oregon sold some over on CPF with flat bottoms, so they can tail stand. You don't have to have a thumb on the lighter to keep it going either. I am really happy with their performance so far. They are super cheap too, so cost is not really a factor. The only negative that they have in comparison to a Bic is that they are heavier, and I am guessing their fuel does not last as long..

Bic

I don't smoke but the bic is edc.
I put minis in the fiskers ax handle kits I carry and a big one goes in the pocket.

I like most here can start fire many odd and interesting ways, but the bic is what I'm using if shtf and need fire now.

Yep,I usually carry a bic or two, when I want a fire now,but most of the time there not used,I normaly use flint and steel or a ferro rod.

I used to think matches were the way to go,but like others on here and elsewere have said,a mini bic takes up the room of what,8 matches, and I've never had a bic crap out that quick. To me there a good, cheap means of fire,as long as you have a second means of fire as well.

I always have one or two on me,not that I use them much, also has magnifying glass and matches and firesteel that I use the most.Don`t know,I think fire is so important that I always want to have backup,

Stopped smoking in 94..........

Carry disposable bics and another that is flame adjustable, in all of my kits and glove compartments and coats and vests and one that made it into EDC. One never knows exactly when they run out of options, so why not expand on them a bit?

I had a brand new Bic break as I was trying to light a fire in the dark on a wet night recently. I'll still use them, as this is a rare occurrance, but I always have matches and a firesteel along too.

i wore our my small ferro rod, so i am trying to decide on a new model to buy, but assuming i have a ferro rod;

i carry the bic in my pocket for lighting candles, melting the ends of nylon cords, maybe sterilizing the tip of a needle to pick at a splinter. they are handy and easy to use. i also use them for lighting fires when i don't really have the time to do it properly with tinder and kindling and things.

for firelighting, for lighting the alcohol stove, etc, i use the ferro rod (or at least i will again when i get a new one)

I have to agree 100%, no matter how good you are at other fire lighting methods why exclude one as good as this.....the more options you have the better and at this price , size and weight you would be a fool not to have one !!!!

When I saw the title I thought you were talking about Razors and from this pic of me you can obviously tell that I do !!!

when we say "bic" in belgium, we mean a ballpoint pen(bic, the company makes them too)

so reading this is just way too damn confusing, i see u guys starting fires with cheap throwaway ballpoints all the time

hahahahaha!!
