To choil or not to choil?

I like the choil, I can really choke up on the blade and get a lot more control for cutting little stuff.

I ordered mine with so I will let you know my opinion once it gets here. :D

I HATE the choils on smaller knives (* ESPECIALLY non-functioning too small choils!!!) like the AD, MS, GW, BA, SS4 and similar. Combined with the Talon Holes, the useless choils ruin those knives for me.

On mid to large sized knives like the TB, SJTAC, Skinny ASH, SARSquatch, HR, FSH, NMSFNO and such, I "Tend" to like the choils. On knives those sizes, I still have a fair amount of blade and choke up for detail work.

I feel on mid-sized knives, if I need to use for detail/task type chores, I often just want the knife to balance better as much as wanting better tip control. So, it depends on the over-all size and design more than a simple length equation for me.

Actually, for me, on the large dedicated choppers such as FBM and NMFBM, I find the choil pretty useless or aesthetical at best. I don't find much value in choking up 1.5" on a 10" or larger blade. 8.5" + is still way too much blade for detail work - IMO. At that point I ALWAYS want another knife. And the reason I ALWAYS carry a smaller 4" - 5" or so bladed knife as a WAY more versatile blade for 90% - 95% of my actual needs and uses in the woods.

But, my break points are probably at around 4.5" - 6" blades or so. It really depends on the over-all knife style and sometimes I tend to get on the fence. The RMD is a good example. I actually don't mind the choil so much. I can use the knife as it is quite well and choke up when I need to. But, I could appreciate the knife quite well without a choil as well.

IMO, the TB's size falls into that area where it "Tries" to be a "ONE Knife" do-it-all approach. I prefer my modified SJTAC or my RMD for this approach and generally feel two knives are better anyway (if I even need the larger one). But, if the TB is to be used for detail/task chores, I think the TB's thick blade will be a tad on the heavy side for detail/task chores if held from the handle. So, I am sure I would prefer the choil to choke up and *** mostly to help "balance" the weight better for such tasks.

YMMV.

I agree with you. I've really been on the fence about ordering a choil with my TB. I think I'm going to get it though. This will be my first Busse. I do like the looks, and I see how it could be useful on this size blade.
