To "clip" or not to "clip." That is the question.

Judy, I also would suggest you pick up another nice knife for yourself while you are buying your boyfriend a knife. Have you looked at the Columbia River Knife and Tool (CRKT) small Point Guard? http://onestopknifeshop.com/store/crkt-crawford-point-guard.html

Also, the CRKT KISS Classic, http://onestopknifeshop.com/store/crkt-kiss-classic.html . Both of these knives have clips on them, and the KISS makes a very nice keychain as well.

CRKT makes a pretty nice knife with nice design features for a low price. Made in Taiwan, but they are very well made. Almost every BladeForums.com member has a good deal of respect for CRKT products.

I love having a clip on my knives, it makes them much more accessible. I use my CRKT PECK at work nearly every day. It's a very small knife with a pocket clip, and I clip it to my watch pocket with the handle on the inside. I work at layaway in Wal-Mart and every day I use it to cut open the tape on the boxes we keep the layaways in. I can pull it out, snap it open and then fold it and put it back in my pocket without ever even looking at it. It's probably my most used knife. Then I have a bigger CRKT M-16 I use for bigger jobs, and its the same way, I can open it, use it, close it and put it away without even having to think about it. I consider a clip essential for an everyday, working knife. A dress knife is a little different, since you aren't as likely to need to get it out very fast.

Hi Judy,

Most of my folders have clips, I love them, but I think for dress wear a non-clip knife would be better. I went to a concert the other night and I saw NO evidence of of ANY knives, I don't think anyone spotted the three I was carrying either.

See my reply in your "Buying my man..." post for my suggestion.

One thing that no one's mentioned is that most knives with clips have the clip screwed on, so you can remove it if you want to.

Theres all kinds of reasons for a clip. I carry a pretty large folder becasue I spend all my time trainign horses adn working on a farm. The clip lets me carry it in my back pocket where I don't notice its size ro weight and leaves my belt free for a multi tool. Its handy even with small knives because it holds it in place, rather than having it bouncing around in your pocket. Spyderco knives have very tight clips that allow for reeally secure carry. Thats better for loose pockets like on dress pants and stuff like that, it won't fall out. Benchmade clips aren't quite as tight.
Clips also let you carry the knife anywhere from the breast pocket of a shirt,a pants pocket, or on a belt.

I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer... but I've got the sharpest knife in the room.

I carry a 734 Browning folder. No clip. Clip is in box that knife came in. I like it in the pocket where it can be in hand while looking inconspicuous. Thumb can already be on button that way.
Then when you have to bring out your "tool" to quickly gut something, it is out and open at the same time.

Oh my, did I say "gut?" I of course meant "cut." Absolutely.

I don't like clips much. They spoil the lines and feel of a knife. They also tend to spoil expensive finishes you brush up against while wearing one, e.g. car paint and furniture varnish.
They also tend to catch on clothing when drawing with varying resistance depending on how they are adjusted which can slow deployment.
Better to keep them in a sheath or pocket IMHO.

Sometimes I clip. Sometimes I don't. Even if the knife has a clip.

Clips are a nice feature on some knives. Not on others. On some clipped knives, I can take it or leave it. It all depends on what I am wearing, were I am going, and why I am carrying that particular knife.

Steve-O nods to Paracelsus..

Circumstances dictate how and where I carry knives. At work, shirt untucked...two on the belt and a multi-tool, to a friends house...a couple clipped to the pocket, dressed up...a couple 'gentlemans' in the pocket or suitcoat. (And many times something extra in a pocket...to play with.

)

Steel type, blade angle, type of knife, carry etc....all dependant on subjective criteria.

Makes it fun, doesn't it?

I feel that the clip gives me quicker access to my pocket knife. I found it to be extremely useful, especially when working around in my garage when one hand is occupied and I need to get my pocket knife out quickly. Also, you want a thumb stud, hole, or other apparatus so you can thumb it open one-handed very quickly.

I think the clip is more a man's thing. My wife puts her knife (even having a clip) in her fannie pack. I haven't carried a knife loose in my pocket since clips came into existance, though I do have spares without clips tossed in my jump pack, glove compartment, etc.

Carry is typically in my waist band. I clip to pocket only as a temporary measure when I am closing and returning the knife because I can't usually do the waist band one handed, but the pocket is easy to reach.

When I have to go dressy, I still clip to waist band, which is easily hidden by belt and/or jacket, but more importantly I carry smaller and lighter knives when dressed up. Around the farm on my jeans or other work clothes I carry relatively large and heavier folders like a Sebenza, Leopard, or maybe Spyderco Endura. When dressed its much more likely to be a Spydie dragonfly, delica or mouse these days.
