To Clipit or not to Clipit

I recently received my Spydie catalog, including a mid years update poster. It reminded me Spyderco was all about clipping your Spydies to your pocket, now and even more then with the advent of their clipit marketing. So how many of you Clipit and how many don't and, of course, why?

It's all about the clip for me. Tip up or tip down is what I struggle with...

I'd be happy if they left the clips off and didn't drill the holes. I guess I need custom scales! I blame my history with traditional folders, I expect the knife to be sitting in the bottom of the left front pocket.

I'm all about clipit! It comes from years carrying my Microtech auto in my vest pocket. I find it easier in civies also, I always know where to find my blade without fumbling for it deep in my pocket

The advantage of a clip - for me - is to hasten deployment. When I want to cut something, I don't want to go fumbling around and digging through the bottom of my pocket. And there are situations where speed of deployment could be crucial where life or health is involved. So while I love traditional knives and all that goes with it, the speed of deployment is what seals the deal for me.

On my Spydies it is always Clipit W/point down as when clears the pocket it is open like it should be.!***
You just can't beat a SPYDERCO..!!!

I usually remove the clip if I ever intend to actually use the knife for more than opening boxes or "self defense." One time I carved out a sword from a 2x4 for my daughter using a folder with a clip and it was really, REALLY uncomfortable!

I'm a tip up man, it seems to position the knife in my hand for best opening. Sometimes I pull my knife and don't want it to open exactly at that time. Maybe preparing to do some work and someone approaches. I want to have it in my hand but not deployed

'Nuff said

Down in the pocket most of the time. I've scratched too many cars, questioned by too many mundanes, and worn out too many pocket tops.

I must admit that clipping works a whole lot better for getting the knife out when sitting, but where I sit a lot (car, work desk and home desk) I already have a knife out and ready for use.

I do occasionally use the clips in the summer, when I don't have pockets, I will clip to the waistband or paracord around my neck.

Definitely food for thought, although I've never scratched a car, but now that I have said it, we'll, you know! Lol

Only pocketknife I ever lost was a clipped knife. Had several others attempt escape by catching on things. (seatbelts mostly.) I gave up on clips and put a lanyard/fob on all mine. That said, I do like the clips for the backup knives I keep in my bag.

Grizz

Unless it's a knife I'm just "test driving" for Sal, the clip get removed before it goes into my back pocket for the first time. I've carried a knife back there pretty much every day for the last 60 years, never lost one, never damaged one, and never scratched anything I did not intend to scratch with one. Beyond that, I just think it's better not to advertise, have no need to do "quick draw" with a knife, and, like Chris, I hate the feel of the clip against my hand while I'm using the knife. I'm sure some folks find the accessibility offered by clipped carry worth all the potential negatives, but I don't.

I take all the clips off my knives. I prefer clipless pocket carry. Front or back pocket depending on knife size.

Clipped with a small spyderco or SAK in the bottom of the same pocket along with a mini bic lighter.

I like the clip for the most part, but on the Manix XL in particular I go clipless. The clip just makes that one ride way too high, and it's big enough that it's close at hand even when at the bottom of the pocket.

If I'm doing a job that requires me to constantly pull out my knife I tend to clip the knife to my shirt pocket or button hole do I know it's there and I notice immediately that it's missing. Otherwise it's in the bottom of my pocket.

I'm a firm believer in having a dedicated SD blade if you choose to carry one and that should be a FB, I mean other than the obvious pistol if you live where you're allowed to carry concealed or open.

A clip is the main reason I carry a modern folder every day.

I usually have a small traditional on me too, and if not for the modern clipped knife I would probably only carry traditionals.
