To get the Wave feature, or not?

I have rarely waved my Emersons, or my waved Endura, for that matter. But it isn't in my way, and I do use it instead of the disc sometimes.

Fit & finish, the last thing, really? My current carry Emersons are a 2005 Commander and a 2013 Gentleman Jim. I just ran my finger around each and cannot feel an imperfection in scales or liners.

No, they aren't Sebenzas. But I have a few more besides those two, and they are well-made. :)

I have one other knife that has that type of feature. The T3 from DPx, of course it's labeled as a cap lifter etc. IMO you don't ever actually need that feature till you need that feature and what a nice 'add on ' to have in a pinch.

I actually needed that feature three times in a tad over a year with the T3 and the blade snapped out with authority each and every time. I used the 'real wave' on The7 the other day and I must say I felt confident in the act of pulling that it would deliver the goods and deliver it did. With authority.

Having said that. I can just imagine being in a SD situation and 'pulling on an Emerson' and the type of "moment of pause" it would create even in the mind of someone intent on doing you harm. It is for that reason alone that it would just be plain silly IMO to actually 'choose' not to have the feature on your piece. But you know what my opinion is worth? Just ask someone here and they'll tell you.;-)

Really? Pulling out the knife with the wave is gonna make an attacker pause?

I put a couple of layers of black duct tape on the edge of my pants pocket and melt it on with a lighter. This way my pants pocket doesn't get torn up from waving.

To the OP, the wave is definitely the way to go, at least for your first Emerson.
Seriously?

I have to look hard to find an Emerson folder whose G10 scales actually fit the frame underneath. It's been my experience that the last thing Emerson Knives are known for is their fit and finish....

The fit and finish complaint. Most of the times it is brought up it is just words on a page. No pictures or anything. Maybe that's because they have already been sold or something, I don't know.

You say that it is poor fit and finish because the G10 sits very slightly (less than a mm) proud of the liners. Well that is your opinion. I say that it is intelligent design. Out of the 6 actual Emersons I've owned 5 of them were waved with g10 and liner locks. (the 6th was a 2001 Raven that lacked a wave and had a different handle material) Of the 5 they were all made essentially the same in terms of build quality and consistency. What I noticed on my first one (mini Commander) and all subsequent g10 waved Emersons is that on each on the g10 sits a hair proud of the liners and then the liners sit just a hair proud of backspacer. From my experience, this makes for a perfect small depression for your thumb to rest on the handle in both a regular grip and especially in reverse grip. If it was completely flat, it would be easier to slip off. Is that their intended purpose? I have no idea. All I know is that each one came consistent with the one before it in this regard. YMMV

Also, there are other manufacturers that are known for their impeccable fit and finish that have models where the g10/carbon fiber intentionally don't match up with the liners. I generally don't hear anything but praise for these models either. I am sure they are fine specimens and wouldn't mind trying one myself. I just don't understand why is this an issue with one brand and not the other.

Here's a pic of my 10 (left) with my mini Commander to show the ever slight depression or lack of fit and finish. Whatever you would like to call it.

I just found this forum today, but I have used Emerson knives for years.

I have two Super CQC-7B BT's and a 10 (all three are waved, that feature is what attracted me to Emerson originally). My liner spacers look exactly the same as these two pics on all three.

Wave everything!

(Even folding shotgun stocks)

It is better to wave than never to have waved at all.

Get the wave, if you don't like it file it off simple as that.

I don't have pictures, because they were returned immediately, but I had several (3) brand new Emersons that were all sorts of messed up. One had a chunk missing from the backspacer, one had a blade that would not center (I believe the pivot pin was crooked because the holes were misaligned) so the blade scratched on the frame every time it was opened, and one had clip screws that were off center so the screws would strip every time they were removed.

That said, the last three EKI knives I've bought (CQC-7B BT, A-100 SF, A-100 BT) have been perfect.

Agreed.

After playing with my CQC-7B BT (first Emerson in a looong time) I agree. It grabs back at my hand, it seems, like the design on the handle of the BRKT STS-5 (concave grip face).

Get the wave! If you're like me you'll tear up the pocket of ONE pair of jeans learning how to do it correctly, then after that, never again. You'll have it down.

And the satisfying "clack" you hear will make you smile, guaranteed. :glee:
