To give in to the sheep, or not to give in to the sheep?

See, I'm not so sure this is a symptom of modern-gun-grabbing-sheeple-syndrome. I'm guessing that a large, ugly, designed-to-look-mean-and-dangerous knife would've been just as inappropriate in a professional office in 1905 as it is now.

And I don't know the period very well, but weren't gentlemen expected to carry their weapons discreetly then, too? Brandishing a weapon when a more elegant tool will do just strikes me as... unseemly.

I mean, imagine a scrivener walking into his employer's office and opening his mail with a sword-cane... :D

... knowing your audience. You can carry anything you want if nobody else sees it! I EDC ( school teacher) a VIC classic and sometimes a small slip . The rules state blade < 3 inches. I don't want to push my luck, neither should anyone else at a place of employment. On my time off I'll do what I want. I carry a SAK, some type of slipjoint and a tactical in the car to slip into my pocket after work.
Years ago alot of guys carried Buck knives in belt sheaths. I don't see much of that anymore. They seem to have been replaced by multi tools or pocket clip tacticals. On a Civil war related web site I saw coroner reports of soldiers and civilians during the era. This article focused on their personal property at the time of their demise. Almost all the men had at least one pocket knife.

In places were I know the law is on my side and I don't need the people to like me, I carry whatever I want openly. If the law is on your side and you don't care about offending some people, go with whatever you want.

There are some situations in which a little more caution is required. I used to run wargame demos at a friend's store, and there were lots of kids, so whenever something needed cutting (very often) I went for my SAK instead of a bigger knife. I didn't use my bigger knives for the same reason that we didn't drink alcohol or leave cigarettes lying around. If your boss is against knives, or at least "scary" knives, you might want to add a more sheeple friendly knife to your EDC.

I've found a compact SAK to be very useful. It is usually kept handier than a multitool (lots of folks carry their multitools in their packs) and it is a lot lighter. A Spartan, Climber, Soldier or Huntsman would be a good solution to your problem. Nobody, even the most cowardly maggot, freaks out when you pull out a SAK, and the tools do come in handy (and lengthen the life span of your better knives because they aren't used to turn screws or pry).

Opinels and nice slipjoints seem to be rather sheeple friendly, too. And they make a good back up for your Strider.

This is why I started carrying a Spydie Dragonfly along with my SMF. If I have to cut something at work and sheeple are around, it's just a cute little pocketknife.

To prevent sheep stampeding at the university where I work, I keep a Mini-Buck in my front pocket. Adequate for most cutting tasks. Also keep a Leatheman in my leather portfolio when toughr tasks are needed. Once pulled out my CUDA EDC to open a computer box in the library and some of the employees freaked out. The bleating and clucking was unbelievable. Best to just use my Mini-Buck. A lot better on my ears.

Thats a nice piece Esav put up. But I NEVER wear a watch or carry pen, just don't see the need. But I'll carry a knife in my swim trunks.

Huh. I misplaced my wristwatch recently, but I can still check the time on my cellphone.

But I can't imagine going around without a pen. I'd feel just as naked as I do without a knife :D
Nope, whatever I'm wearing, however light I'm traveling, there's _always_ a knife, fountain pen, and Moleskine notebook in my pocket. And my Yeoman SAK has a backup ballpoint, just in case.

I know, it´s a matter of personal taste and preference, but i second you bosses view. Even though i don´t really know what "scary" may be in german i remember the "scary movie" which was a teenage horror movie or the persiflage of it.

I don´t know where you work or whatever, but i can imagine from you first post, that your boss has a view for a serious knife and found yours not to be serious in the way of "just mans oldest tool".

You may share or share not his or my views but i wouldn´t pack this under the term "sheeple".

It´s a matter of taste and at least a question how important this knife is to you both (carrying vs. not carrying)

I would choose a Spyderco Paramillie or Millie or a BM 520 or Griptilian or 710 or a Camillus Heat or that type if a solid knife is needed.

As I learned in my divorce, people can say whatever they want. Doesn't mean it'll hold up in court. The boss may or may not have been serious but until he puts it in writing, keep doing what you're doing.

Here in the U.K. as well as sheeple to deal with we have the law  . Lock knives as such are illegal to carry but they are still used over here. I have about 10 or so of them which get rotated as my EDC. Currently it's my Spyderco Calypso Jnr. But as well as these I'll carry a non locking SAK and / or my little Camillus. It's a 4 blader but they are all less than 2" long and the slim almost antique gentlemens style with silver bolsters has never "offended" any one. When there are sheeple about I use this but when I need a bigger knife then I always have it with me as well. It's a compromise but it works for me :D

Typically I will open the knife manually if sheeple are around, though most of my coworkers are used to me having a knife on me, and ask me to cut everything from zip ties to orange peels. I also lent my Graham Brothers Razel to a lady who needed to cut her underwear off :) I did not ask for the details.
I have a coworker who usually carries an AR or an RJ Martin Devastator.

drjones,I would carry the biggest knife law allows and a Vic classic for cleaning nails, etc.Next time anyone including the Boss asks to use your knife, tell them go get their own or use their teeth.tom.

Whooop! After that, you can carry anything!

Actually, it's nice to be big and brave and say we should wave what we like around the workfloor, but conditions of employment are generally worth the salary, or we'd be working elsewhere. I didn't wear a suit and tie on the workfloor or jeans and a sweatshirt when I worked in the office. There is nothing cowardly about appropriate behavior.

I carry for the situation and environment. I dont carry a large fixed blade to a school function or to the bank. But rather a smaller appropriate folder. If the GB fits your environment, then go for it, but if its not, then look for one that fits better. Dont change just because someone else has an issue. There are other jobs out there.

Well said Esav. I was thinking the same thing.

Although we live in a free society, there still are norms to what people consider acceptable behavior and dress (including carry knife). For example, just beacuse I like being in my underwear at home, doesn't mean I am free to go to the mall that way.

I feel that we could do more good to non-knife people by easing them into things, like making their first knife exposure to a SAK rather than a 'tactical beast.' Besides SAK's are more useful, (the screwdriver can be used as a prybar, I don't care who I lend it to and what they do with it, etc.) That's why I usually carry 2 knives, a small Spyderco and a SAK. Just my 2 cents.

What a sad state of affairs. With thinking like some posting in here, this is a look into our future...

"...Here in the U.K. as well as sheeple to deal with we have the law . Lock knives as such are illegal to carry..."

With the sheeple running our lives, we are going to lose more freedom and rights than than we already have. I respect the opinions of others, but I am disappointed with the number of knife owners who are willing to be led by sheeple. Stay in good taste and dont worry about the opinions of those whom knives or guns or chevys ar'nt their thing.
