To good to give away

In the late 1930s here in Portland, Oregon, a young blacksmith named David Zephaniah Murphy started making steak knives and carving sets. He made the blades from scrap steel and the handles from aluminium from Ford automobile pistons. He sold the knives himself, door-to-door. One day, he knocked on the door of a local advertising and marketing man, Joseph R. Gerber. Gerber was very impressed with Murphy's knives and contracted Murphy to supply him with knives which he sold under the Gerber Legendary Blades name. The rest is history.

Next weekend, I'll be attending a wedding. So, of course, I need gift to bring.

Today, I visited a favorite knife dealer. So, I asked to see some carving sets hoping to find a good wedding gift. I was shown a wonderful original David Murphy set in the original fitted box in excellent condition and immediately bought it.

When I got it home and started to clean it up a bit to prepare it for giving, I decided it was to good to give away and I'm gonna keep it!

So, has anything like this every happened to you? A knife you bought as a gift, but decided to keep?

Shame on you, Chuck!!

Can you justify this by thinking they would probably just use them for screwdrivers and prybars? That's the rationale I used when I did this to my brother-in-law at Christmas.

With me, usually it's just the opposite! I love to give knives away to folks who show an interest or have endeared themselves to me for any reason. Often, I will give away a "keeper" on impulse, and then start looking for another for me!(I don't blame you for keeping the set, BTW!)

Chuck,
Truth be told, only you can appreciate this Murphy knife set. Your friend more than likely would not. Get him a candle stick holder....hahahah.

I would have done the same thing. They probably wouldn't have used them since they looked "old".
