to heat or not to heat?

Hello everyone. I'm a newbie and I have a newbie question :D
I am making knives from old lawn mower blades I picked up from a local repair shop. I am only doing the stock removal method, no forging. Do I still need to heat-treat these knives being that they are being made from steel that is already treated? Also, I know that there is endless information sources out there for heat treating, but can someone please recommend a source for a simple heat treating process for new knife-makers, as most of the books I have read get rather complex? I'm not looking to sell my knives, I just love working on them; but I do want them to be of a good quality (temper wise), so I can use them.
Thanks!

As long as you dont over heat (turn blue) while grinding you dont need to heat treat again. The best book on basics without any fancy stuff is the Wayne Goddard's $50 Knife Shop you can order this pretty cheap.

I have not worked with lawn mower blades, I wonder if the whole blade is heat treated or just the edge. I have shapend a few and they seem pretty soft.
