Small game season has officially opened here. Usually going after rabbits and squirrels is what my boy and I spend most of our time doing. Or, as I like to call it eating and drinking hot chocolate in the woods.

Well, it doesn't quite feel like fall here yet, but I wanted to get out and do something. I asked my boy and he said "fishing!" So, fishing it is.

Here is the spot we went to. Believe me, there will be a pond out there eventually.

This is why I love the canoe. Nobody bothers going through this stuff.

Finally....we made it.

These aren't the biggest ones we have caught from here.....but we will take it.

Today, my fishing knife is my pathfinder. Even though it seems big for fishing, I like carrying a fixed blade and an opened top sheath. I can pull it out and put it back with one hand, and not have wiggle around with my pocket.

We caught bluegills, sunfish, perch and bass. We did not keep any bass.

In the end, we ended up with a decent mess of pan fish.

Next on the agenda for today is a hot cast iron frying pan!

Thanks for checking out the pics.

Nice fishing. Wish we had perch down this way. Good eating!

That looks like an excellent day! Your boy looks right at home on the water, great job bro!

You have a really good looking son - and well outfitted also! I have to agree with the canoe and its ability to give you access to places that others pass up. If there isn't a ramp you can call it remote!

Also those bluegills and pumpkinseeds are great eating! I was raised as one of those fish snobs who thought you had to go after bass, walleye, trout or pike to go fishing. I've foregone that attitude now and really enjoy the panfish. You almost never go home empty handed and matched with ultra-light gear they are a lot of fun.

Pathfinder works well chopping those worms into smaller pieces and saves the fingernail from getting gunked up in worm guts. I know I used mine for the same purpose last month! Thanks for sharing your day!

nice trip.

its funny and somewhat comforting to see such a young boy so well equipped blade wise.

Brian, your son looks like he should be the poster boy for enjoying the outdoors...those pics are a treasure.

All right! More fishing pics!!!

Great little pond you have there, looks like a great time for a youngster.

It is funny, around home I just carry my pocket knife, and don't put a belt knife on. Not him, he wears his almost everyday.

My neighbor always jokes with him....saying it must be a rough neighborhood :D

It is also quite funny when we go camping. There will be boys 4 or 5 years older than him and it seems I will always hear one saying "Dad, he has a knife, and his is little. It is a big knife too. Why can't I have one?"

Here he is trying out his new more. Pitdog should look away.....or he will have to go buy another :D
