To MAG or, not to MAG? Here is the question!

I talked to Amy today and she says with her smallish hands and longer fingers it is Magnums for her HANDS DOWN. The extra heft in a knife of this size is going to lend to some chopping you might not try with a similar/thinner knife so the mags will distribute that abuse a lot better. After talking to Amy I felt a lot better about going with Mags on all of my ASH-1's

Edited to add...I just might get a CG with standard slabs because I'm curious. I held an SE ASH and it just seems like a handle shape that is going to be comfortable regardless.

AND Amy is Awesome which isn't new information but bears repeating :D

How true! :thumbup::thumbup: :D

...Thanks for posting this... I was wondering the same thing myself on the handle question; that is which should I choose. I had noticed at BLADE last summer that her hands are very similar to how mine are, so I guess that I'll be going with MAGS on my CG's! Excellent. :)

The selling point on the MAGS on my CG ASH-1s was the fact that the Custom I picked up from the Blood Bath had the standard blade, but the UBER thick smoothed G-10 slabs. Hands down, the most comfortable knife I have ever held to date. My assumption is that the MAGS being offered are more than likely smaller than the Custom, smoothed G-10 ones, hence should feel similar.

I'll try and get some other comparison pics this weekend with other knives w/ MAGS...

At the lower/thinner portion of the magnums they aren't really significantly thicker than standard. The reason I think people like the mags is the palm swell getting more contact and especially the very thick/meaty slab back by the rear talon hole. That broad face on your pinky really keeps you from getting the chopper pinch (as much ;))

stay with the standard scales on the cg. i use mags on the thin blades and standards on the fat blades. imho

Awesome knives! Thanks for the pictures. Would it be easy for you to provide measurements on:
a) the thickness of the blade right before the handle scales of the blade of this particular Custom ASH 1,
b) the thickness of the handle at its thickest part (i.e., where the palm swells are) of this particular Custom ASH 1?

How would you call the color of its blade? Is it Urban Gray?

BTW, this is one thick Custom BATAC ! How thick is it?

Andros,

Don't have one of those thickness measuring devices on hand. I know a bunch of that custom version of the ASH-1s were sold. Maybe someone else can chime in on those measurements. I will see what I have and make a reasonable guess though.

The BATAC is a satin finish and the custom ASH-1 is double cut. The BATAC custom I believe is made from the BATAC LE stock, so 1/4" in thickness, but it may be a little more...

I have the same custom shop ASH-1..

The blade thickness is .220" at the spine, right in front of the handles.
The thickest part of the handles (at the center tube fastener) is .975" thick.

The custom hand shaped handles vary in thickness slightly from one to the next.
My satin w/ red & black G-Rex style has the thinest handles at .892"
and these black & tan G-10 being the thickest. The pumpkin is right in between.

This is the advice for me...

Although I ordered 3 cg's, and put mags on one of them, just in case

After reading every post that you all took the time and the trouble to write I finally decided and I just placed my order: one ASH 1 LE, one CG ASH 1 with Desert Olive blade and magnum black canvas micarta and of course, one Special HOG Edition ASH 1  ! I want to thank all of you for your assistance.

It took me quite some time to make up my mind on the CG (of course, the other two knives are already defined). Almost until the end, I was geared more to ordering it with standard handle scales for the reasons stated by Uncle-Jarvis (post #4), MD13 (post #5), Elen (post #6), mike biz (post #9), Dennis in MA (post #15), Hogwash (post #16), idahoskunk (post #24) and xaman (post #30). Let me tell you what made me to order the CG with magnum handles as well.

With this particular post I was able to obtain quantifiable data. Still though, that wasn't enough for me to decide. I needed to compare these data with knife handles I had withing reach. That is exactly what I did: I took my electronic digital caliper and took a couple of knives that provide me with a comfortable grip. I was amazed to see that one of my leuku's has a handle width of 1.272" and I was comfortable with it! So, there you have it! I believe I made the right choice for me. I emphasize the word "me" because I think that it is a personal thing after all. Still though, to be honest, I have to wait and see if I chose right or, I should have done otherwise.
Now, I can go and vote at Paddling_Man's post :). Nuke On!

I can get comfortable with both sizes but went with the black canvas mags and a double cut blade. From a purely aesthetic standpoint I hate the way the standard handles look with the ASH configuration and the mags look cool. Also I can always mod the mags to make them thinner but not the obverse
