To make a Break ...

Some old fellows turned their back to the Buck knife forum in silence.
Why? I don't know. I asked some of them, but tey couldn't give me a
satisfying answer. "The forum becomes stale, too stpid, no longer my
league, uninteresting topics", nothing tangible.

But now I am in the same situation. More and more I get annoyed about
some posts or threads. It is too much for me when there is a new Member
posting mor than 100 posts during his first five days.

You all know, I have to translate all the words I read and it is smply too much
to do to read all the words, sentences, paragraphs and to get to know that
there is no content in it ... may be a few ...

Well, a lot of words for a few content, I think I make a break.
Let's see, may be that I am reading what is interesting for me and have a look at
Armands greatest show on earth, and may be that the break is over at one time.
But now ...

Thank you Guys for the great time I had here in the Buck part
af the Blade Forums. Thank you!

Haebbie

Well I'm a new guy on here, and I've made quite a few posts. But isn't that what a forum is for? Information, chatting about whatever the subject is at hand? And there are a couple of people on here I've seen seems like they have no idea about buck history in any way. Very annoying.

You, European fellow, are a cornerstone/key building block of the Buck forum. I have been excited and charmed by your clever knowledge of the Buck product line over time and your tremendous collection. You pay a great honor to the Buck marquee by your attention to Buck, your extensive and wonderful collection and by your erudite participation to the forum. I agree completely with you that the forum can hard to take from time to time. Thank you for your enthusiasm, kind heart and bright mind.

Herbert…I sure hope it's not a long break you decide to take.

I have always enjoyed your posts, your collection of knives (Buck knives and others), your knife and wildlife photography and your knowledge.

Hope to see you back soon my friend.

Haebbie, I am saddened to see you leave with your knowledge and fine collection to help mark a point. I do hope to see your fine posts of knives and beautiful scenery on the SPS.

Being fairly new I will miss your knowledge, I did get great Buck info from your participation. I will also miss the great pics of your awesome collection. Unfortunately forums are public venues, but people leave as fast as they join weeding out the "people with too much time on their hands". Hope you come back soon.

Haebbie, whenever I am in the Buck forum, I look for your posts, especially in the Greatest Show on Earth :) Thank You for what you have brought here.

Herbert - I met you for the 1st time at the Buck 25th anniversary event in Post Falls and very much enjoyed our conversation and your knowledge of the Buck knives and their history. I was overjoyed to find out you were part of this great forum and a weekly contributor to Armands Sunday picture show and enjoyed your posts and pictures of both the fantastic knives in your collection and your knowledge regarding them as well as your fantastic wildlife pictures. I do understand what you are talking about and I will look forward to when you decide to come back. I think I speek for all that you are a great part of what makes this forum great for us all.

Your BCCI friend.

Haebbie, Don't go. Your knowledge, conduct and spirit are too valuable and cannot be replaced.
I too have ask many of our collectors if they knew about the Buck Forum and they didn't. Or just hear say about the arguing that goes on here at times. There was a time about a year and a half ago I wanted to leave because of this, conduct led by 2 persons. Now, they're gone and things are better. I'm sure it's hard on you to translate all these posts but please don't leave my friend. DM

Heabbie, I don't know u but, I'm reading all these posts that people are leaving u. And I to have to ask u to stay. U have a lot of good input and knowledge it seems. There's not a lot of that left. Please reconsider.

Haebbie,

I've been involved with internet forums since the early 90s, back in the rough and tumble days of usenet.

In some forums, I've been an old expert. In many more, the newbie. I've been lurker in some, participant in others and a moderator in several (enough to know that they don't pay 300Bucks enough).

My sense is what you are feeling is very common among experts in forums. It's a form of burn out. For a while, it is interesting to talk with other experts about the finer points of the subject. Some experts get gratification in helping the newbies along. But often (or eventually) and after answer the same question the 1 zillionth time, it's no longer fun.

I've not found a good way to maintain my interest forums in which I'm an expert. I find it comes and goes with my involvement with the activity. When I'm injured (as I am currently), I can't maintain presence or interest in the cycling forums I care about. When time limits my ability to ski or hike, the same thing happens to me in those forums.

One of the things I've found most frustrating in forums where I'm of an expert is the need to retype the same answer over and over again. It got to the point where I just put up my own static web sites on backcountry skiing and sport touring bikes. I found that exercise very gratifying and found great satisfaction in pointing both newbies and other experts to those pages. Eventually, I lost interest/time to maintain those pages, but they're still up and I still get email from people who've found them and who appreciate the content.

Bottom line, I change and note that other experts tend to change. And forums change. People come and go and the same friends/enemies come and go. At the end of day, only you can decide if participating remains gratifying to you, including all of the newbies (like me) and cyclic topics (which you've seen a zillion times).

I wrote this up nearly 10 years ago in response to an out and out war on a skiing forum... You might find something that helps here...

Herbert, To be honest, if I was not Moderator, I would not read almost all posts. In fact I count on many folks, you for one, to help police the bad people that come here hoping to cause trouble. Please give a try at reading the thread subject and skipping it if it sounds like something that you are spending time on for no enjoyment. I think it is just natural to slow down after a time. I know I can and have asked for help and several of the long time Buck forum members have responded. I know they are lurking over on the edge of the room, ready to comment when we need to battle for truth and justice. I have answered some 300 questions over and over but I look at it that I must as long as I am able......I hope you will keep sharing, especially your excellent photos. 300

Herbert, my friend for ever... I wish you wouldn't go... I will miss you dearly...
The Greatest Show On Earth will SUCK with out you... All your pictures of your
Beautiful Buck Knives and Wildlife scenes we will miss... I will miss your pictures
of your knives that you made or re-handled... Pictures of your family and your
cool looking dog... All your knowledge will be missed... :(

I want to thank you for saying good bye this way on the forum and not just leaving
with out us knowing what happen to you... Like other have done... I hope to get a
e-mail from you every so often to let me know what's going on in your life... :)

I wish only the Best for you and your family... Take care, my friend... Armand

Being a member here for one year this month, I have to say that I have looked forward to reading your posts and seeing your photos!
I have learned a lot from you, THANK YOU.
I wish you would reconsider leaving, and hope you stay.

It is overwhelming. I am deeply impressed with the posts here in the thread.
If I don't see so many kind and praising posts in this thread I wouldn't believe it.
I had a lot of things in my head to answer but I don't know how to word it.
Since I am member of this Forum I saw births, deaths, sickness, joyce, misery
and more, all in this forum or in its background.

I attended to the last two BCCI
anniversary celebrations and was guest at Dave M.'s wedding. (I hope this will
not be the only journeys to America I will have in my life). All these things left
marks in my mind, I think more than anybody can relieve who simply enters
a Forum to suck some informations or to chat around Buck knives. For me the
Forum was always more, at least, when I recall the past, a part of my life.
It was a pleasure for me to fill the forum with life, let's say with informations,
pictures, tips or private suggestions.

I take a time out and have a look from time to time to get back when I get the
sense of the written words again. Let's see what happens. May be that there are some
SPS pictures left ;)

U R great, guys! Thank you! May God bless you!

Herbert

Hope you will reconsider or at the very least make it a short break. I enjoy your company on the forum and will miss seeing your posts while you are away.
