To Patent Or Not To Patent?

Hey Phil,
Don't know about Ken and fixed blades, but I have one :)

What little good it does me :(

Well Kit, congratulations.
I was actually thinking that it would be harder to get a patent on a fixed blade than a folder or locking folder or even a automatic or assisted opening knife.

I think I have about three patents on fixed blades ,maybe more but they tend to be design patents rather than utility patents . Although I believe there is a patent pending on a fixed blade trying to get a utility patent on a new kitchen knife design. We also have patent pendings on various assisted opening mechs and other asorted gizmos. Having an 800 lb gorilla helps a ton I never could have paid for all the patents let alone defend them. Attorneys will suck you dry, they all drag there heels and pad there bills and never commit to anything. Part of life I guess .
For someone who has a great idea and doesn't have the luxury of an 800 lb gorilla I would be cautious and consult someone who has experience in this arena to help answer the questions you have and to help you understand all of the subtlties of aquiring a patent. Don't tell anyone your invention secrets ,youd be suprised how many of your suposed friends and family will cut your throat ,steal your invention and leave you to rot if they think they can turn a buck and get by with it . Believe me ! I speak from experience . Statistics show that over 80% of the patents filed per year never get used .
