I have a decision to make and I thought I would get the hive to weigh in on how everyone else decides.

What do you all do with your " extra" knives? Do you sell them or do you give them away? Do you not understand the term "extra knives"?

In the past if I have decided that if I have a knife that I no longer have use for Ive mostly given them away to my kids, my wife, guys that work for me, neighbor kids etc. Over the years this has included a few small Sebenzas and a Hinderer as well as too many Buck 303s to count.

Now don't get me wrong I have sold a bunch of knives over the years, Usually during the searching for a new EDC phase. I'll buy a knife I want to try and If it doesn't work out Ill toss it up on the exchange to raise funds for the next trial. This process continues until I am happy ( can take a long time and many knives as you all know too well).

The knives I am talking about here are those knives you have used and enjoyed but are done with. Let's say you have a much loved knife and decided that you like it so much you will buy a new one in an upgraded steel. Well you don't need two of the exact knife so what do you do with the used one? Here is my latest example:

I have carried a large Inkosi Insingo most days since late February. I freaking love the knife, so much so I just jumped on a Magnacut version that will arrive Monday. Now what do I do with the S45Vn version? I sure don't need it and I'll probably never put it in my pocket over the Magnacut . I could give it to a Son or Son-in-law or my knife crazy favorite Daughter. I could sell it on the exchange or the bay I guess ( only on the bay as a last resort). Hell I could even host a giveaway here. What to do? This decision is made a but tougher as the value of the knife comes down. This one is well used and will need to be discounted heavily to be fair and honest to a potential buyer. At what point does it become more of a pain in the ass to sell as to just make someones day with a gift?

I am not asking you what I should do with my knife and please do not make me any offers to buy or trade. I'm asking what you do when you are faced with these situations . Or have you never been in this spot or.....

Mostly give them away usually to my kids/ nephews.

If I have a junker that I don’t want them to have, I leave it on a shelf at work. Were we open boxes. Its never there when I get back. Funny no one ever puts up a lost and found note either.

Jokes on them, its a pos.

I've previously sold knives I haven't got on with, I've also gifted knives (bought new to give to people) that I like. I don't really have a lot of 'knife friends' so none of the ones I sold had friends saying 'oh, I like that, let me try it.'

I sold a few at a yard sale years ago, but otherwise I'll either gift or go buy a gift.

Both, but much more frequently give knives rather than sell.

However for folks that are cycling through lots of knives to find their favorites it makes sense to sell often…

I some how posted this before it was done and have asked for them to be combined The finished poll is much better

Did you know a bunch of your coworkers believe your place of employment has a Knife Fairy? 🤣

I don't have many knives, certainly not enough to have this "extra knife" problem I've read about, but I have given a couple to my son.
I would be more apt to keep any excess as barter for the apocalypse. 🤪

I've given away and sold. I've regretted a few of the gifts, but most of them are very enamored with the knife. Apparently my half brother-in-law loves the PM3 lw Spy27 I gave him, and is constantly fiddling with it.

I gave my niece my WE Deacon and she loves it, but hides her fidgeting from her parents she told me.

Everyone I've given a knife to mentions it when they see me. It's something people normally just don't think to buy.

Like you, I've given away plenty of knives...custom and production...to folks here on the forums, workmen that have done work for me at my home, friends, family, neighbors and knife makers I am friendly with.

I also sell some here from time to time...not a lot, but more than my feedback score indicates.

I don't have a process. I just go by what I feel like doing with that particular knife and with any particular person (or group giveaway).

Not much help...but it is what it is.

I need to sell a bunch, just can't seem to get around to it.

I do give a bunch away. In particular, a family member enjoys nice knives as much as I do, but has much more important things to do with his income. The knife fairy tends to treat him pretty well.

My option would be "depends on the recipient."

"Are you some kind of a moron?" This is the question I ask the recipient in the vetting process.
You are absolutely and totally bringing up a significant point. If the recipient isn't competent or confident with a knife: I train them upon gifting them a knife.

I'm humble, I've cut myself more times than I can remember. I make sure that their first kiss from a knife doesn't happen the moment I give it them or anytime soon.

I always give a recipient a box of bandaids too...
