Mostly I resell, but when I acquire sort of flagship or base models, I like to keep a few lying around NIB to give away, like Delicas or Bugouts or Griptilians. The sort of knife that people who are not into knives will recognize as a big quality upgrade and hopefully get some use out of. I find myself running into someone every year or two who could use a good knife.

I have given away tons of sub-$100 knives but since I don't know anyone really into knives the good ones are wasted on them (lost, abused, unused) and much more appreciated by buyers here on the exchange.

I'm not sure how to answer....?

I gift Lots of knives, too many actually. But they are knives that I make.
To me, in my mind, Those are worth more.

I've occasionally sell a production knife here and there, but it's kinda rare.

My "knife collection" is growing more than I like, but mostly it's reference for what I like with knives, and more importantly .....what I Don't like in knives. I keep those and take measurements.

I needed to select quite a few choices and could only pick up to two according to the poll parameters, so I voted you as the moron! Lol.

I’ve sold them, gifted them and also traded them and those decisions were always based on the value, the attachment to the knife and also just a gut feeling in the moment. Not sure how to say it other than it always seems to be different. 🍺

It just depends on the knife. I have a sweet spot for a knife I no longer have use for and I’m willing to gift to the right person that I know will appreciate it, use it, and do right by it. I have gifted plenty of knives and I feel like I’ve been a good judge of what I’ve gifted to who so far.

I adjusted to poll to allow unlimited responses…I should lose the moron choice!

Like you, I've given away plenty of knives...custom and production...to folks here on the forums, workmen that have done work for me at my home, friends, family, neighbors and knife makers I am friendly with.

I also sell some here from time to time...not a lot, but more than my feedback score indicates.

I don't have a process. I just go by what I feel like doing with that particular knife and with any particular person (or group giveaway).

Not much help...but it is what it is.

People I know don’t care about a free knife or even one for sale. Those people I know that do like knives already have. I sell, use that money for the next expensive one. Extra knives are like extra money, better to have and not need, than need and not have

I've never sold a knife and only traded a couple swords, and even that was a "just send me what you think it's worth" kind of deal.

I usually give my knives to my brothers. Today I wanted to buy a new OTF. I had a good reason to buy it, but I didn't have a good reason to add another to the stables. So to justify it, I scooped up a about 6 that were collecting dust in the drawer and went to each of my two brothers and asked them which one they wanted.

One can afford a new knife but would never spend that level of cash on it, but he will appreciate it. The other is the youngest and still learning about budgeting. He's also a new dad. So his tastes tend to outpace his wallet. I'd rather just give him something nice rather than make him pay me back. I wish someone would have given me slightly used $200 automatics when I get was 22 :D

In all honesty, I just like giving them to those that can use them. When we get too attached then we start to horde. This hobby has spanned many decades for me, and while it's been expensive, the easy breezy come and go of knives finding their right homes has been just as rewarding as collecting things I have forgotten I've purchased.

I’ve given several to coworkers and friends over the years. I don’t really sell many because I’ve never had any luck selling anything. Cheap ones are usually given to my sons. The better quality is given to coworkers until my sons can be responsible with their possessions.

Extra knives? Mostly sell, but I've gifted a few knives I didn't want anymore. For gift knives, I mostly pick them specifically for the individual receiving, based on factors like usage paterns and needs.

I also like the idea of offering a choice of knives when I can.

A few times I’ve even gone so far as to wrap up several knives in one box for Xmas and told the recipient that they just get to choose their favorite.

I’ve gifted and sold knives. Typically, I look at the Want To Buy forum and have sold several from there. I’ve looked at the sales forum and have sold to folks that called seconds.
I’ve gifted knives to co workers, family members and friends.

I think it's great to gift a knife. Short story...a year ago I bought what I thought was a real benchmade bugout. Turns out it was fake. I was pissed.
Two days later my sons girlfriends grandpa gave him a benchmade osborne just because. Some sort of reverse karma maybe haha.

Gifts... 100% of the time.
It doesn't matter what the value is. It's the value of the friendship; that I share with the recipient.
Last night: I gave a Carothers SDFK to a good friend. He really REALLY appreciates good knives; but just can't afford to buy the knives that are always on his radar.
That makes me a knife collection enabler! 🤣
