If I had my choice, I'd skip shields altogether. Some do look nice it's true, but I'd still rather see the the unbroken view of beautifully figured stag or bone.
In general I like a shield on my slipjoint knives, especially the traditional patterns. There are some shields I don't particularly like, so I avoid them.
