To slip, or not to slip

That is the question. I'm a slip guy. I never used to be, but I've also never used the pocket clips and finally scratched the heck out of one of my nicer show scales, so now I carry slip at all times no matter what.

What's your thoughts on slip carry? Where do you get your favorite slips from? I'm definitely looking to add some.

I only uses a slip for one knife, because it is too large for my watch pockets. It is a William Henry and it's the best slip I've ever seen. The black leather is heavy but soft and supple. and below the clip, there is a small black pearl-looking piece that has half of the large pearl visible, and this helps slipping the clip over your jeans., All the other slips I have I never use.

I have a few inexpensive ones (Case among others) that I tried as proof of concept and they've worked so well that I've just stuck with them out of convenience. I'd really like to get into making my own at some point, but if I were looking to buy I'd look no further than our own Sharp & Fiery Sharp & Fiery . Check out his sub-forum here and give him a shout.

I have a lot of slips (knife purses), both cloth and leather. A large portion of my collection is traditional European knives and they tend to include a slip of some kind.

By far (other than custom) the best slips I have are from Fontenille Pataud. I'm not sure if they sell them separately, but they are included with every knife. The leather is about 2mm (1/16") thick, so they don't add much bulk.

Gary W. Graley Gary W. Graley made this one for me.... maybe he would take on a project for you?

I made this one, hand stitched (poorly 😬) with thicker leather. Made it because I found it difficult to find slips for larger knives. You may have to go custom.

I think Beard & Owl makes them also.

Good luck!

Depends on the knife. Some knives, I don't hesitate to cut stuff that may scratch the blade, or to put them in a pocket with keys. However, if it's a knife that I have paid a premium for laser anodized graphics, or fancy wood, then I carry the knife in a slip, or put it in the other pocket away from coins and keys.

No slip here. In the pocket with coins and keys and everything else. Character in spades. And no rust from the slip…

Do slips promote rust forming?

I've been using them 100% of the time for years and never had any issues, even with carbon steel. That said, I don't store knives in slips or sheaths.

I'm glad somebody brought this up. I could see a slip adding to the potential of corrosion. I'd actually never thought of it before. I even currently store my knives in slips (those that came with them). I don't live in a particularly wet or humid climate, my knives stay indoors or in my pocket and I work a desk job with little potential for enough sweating to be a risk. Still, it's something to consider, and I may change how they're stored because of this.

I'd be very curious to know if anyone has experienced this being an issue for them. Has a slip ever been cause for a knife to rust anymore than it already would have otherwise?

Using veggie tan leather certainly helps to limit any rusting, but I think long storage time in a drawer could be problematic, so you should remove them from the sheath when storing them just as a routine.

Definitely would be prudent to do so

Got these two cloth clips from Beard & Owl, both have been getting pretty regular use and have held up well.
