So let me preface this by saying I landed on this thread because I was looking for a knife forums' discord where I could jump in and ask some basic questions that would be annoying to post a bunch of threads about. What I found instead was, one guy who tried to start one, and a bunch of rude ass people telling him off about spam and stealing business. Really a total turn off to your community in general, given how it seems there were only 1-2 people here that even knew what Discord is, and no one bothered to look into it (or listen to OP trying to explain it) just a little bit and just made some wild assumptions and told the OP to basically get lost.
Discord is a chat program. It is not a forum. It's a program for people to socialize, and talk to each other in real-time VS posting on a forum and waiting hours or days for a response. It keeps your forum cleaner, because all of the idle chatter can be in discord and actual content threads can be on the forum.
Basically every other forum I am apart of has its own Discord server, just like they have their own Facebook page or twitter account. Yet some of the responses here are just downright tinfoil hat, ignorant, or straight-up old curmudgeon "damn kids these days, I been doin' this for 20 years! -shakes cane-"
Ignorance is truly an amazing thing. Let me offer some counterpoints here, first to the moderator who shut him down to begin with:
I get it. Some random guy made a discord server and posted it here, and that didn't fall in line with your rules, you didn't understand what it was, so you told him to get lost. A more level headed response could have been, take 5 minutes to look into what your community member was trying to suggest, and say hey man look sorry you are not affiliated with us, so I took your link down, however I looked into what discord is and we may consider starting our own official server, because it takes all of 30 seconds to make one, and its free, and all our community members could use it! We will consider it and/or mention it to other mods/owners to think about.
See by saying it this way, you didn't tell that guy to get lost, thus losing a community member, and also you got what you wanted and removed the link! And as a bonus, you may have even found a new tool that could benefit your community!
If nothing else, the a Moderator stated that this isn't a forum where they support the advertising of what amounts to a competitor.
I am a paying member here because I appreciate the environment that it offers. I understand that you may be trying to drum up business and members, but you do realize that it may actively take members away from here.
It's not a competitor, there is no business he's trying to drum up or make money on, he's just trying to offer a new addition to the things you already have. By this logic, the BladeForums facebook and twitter pages should be deleted, as those are competing platforms to the forum.
Get over it. The long time knife enthusiasts are comfortable with what they have. We don't need any children telling us what's best for the community.
Wow. Damn kids these days amirite?! Change is scary. While we are at it, let's just go ahead and tell all of the knife makers to stop making new knives, the designs that are out right now are fine, we have had them for years, no one wants anything new, innovation and change are not good. Don't want any of those kids growing up into knife guys right? They might start buying blades! The horror!
Usually when someone I don't know over the Internet tells me to "try" something, I tend not to. Especially when they tell me to "Google" it. What is this "Google"? It sounds dirty.
Ignorance can be fixed by reading and learning, refusal to learn leads to stupidity, for which there is no cure.
You have tried one thread (aside from this one), is that correct?
Have you tried to be part of the community? Did you actually engage in conversations, offer advice, ask for input, et al?
Or was your only attempt at communication on here only an attempt to draw folks to your community that you want to build?
You sir make a fair point! The OP only had a handful of previous posts, so it seems he was a new community member. See my above comment to the moderator, who told him to get lost and locked his thread rather than trying to understand what he was asking for.

your link actually just took me to a sign-up page. i had no idea what i was supposed to be signing up for. so, I had to search for what the heck discordapp was. it does not seem like you're trying to educate. again, it seems that you are trying to market...to sell. my guess is that you get "20 free tokens" for everyone you get to sign up? something like that??
No, its literally just a server where you can chat with people. You don't get paid for it, it doesn't cost anything, and I don't know where you got free tokens from but you clearly didn't look into discord very hard.
Don't use Discord. It's spyware that records all sounds even when it's turned "off."
A few more layers of tinfoil on that hat and it will be bulletproof
