To Strop or not to Strop that is the Question

I often will use my jeans for a final couple of passes after the strop. I find it can make a very minor difference I can feel also.

The material is not as important as pressure. The softer the strop the lighter the pressure should be applied. My favorite is a worn leather belt. I use the sueded side or the smooth side.

I thought the idea of attaching the leather to a piece of wood was to help keep the leather from having too much give so that it doesn't wrap around the edge of the blade thus actually dulling it.

I think that's right. That also explains why, when "stropping," we don't want to push to hard, i.e., just let the weight of the blade do the work.

Thanks again for all the great comments and recommendations, I will definitely look into this further and probably try these techniques on a cheaper knife until I mastered it.
