The AFCK is a classic, there are better knives now, hmmm perhaps but go back to the mid 90's when it has out and compare it to other knives...................

in the day it was imho the best around, #2 was the emerson design 970 or my other favorite at the time the 975, and 3 was a spyderco police or MT SOCOM elite.

I have a small one and a big one. Good disign and material. Outstanding knife even these days. The small one was my EDC for years in the late 90-ties and the big one is even used moosehunting. Nowadays I never carry more taktical than a caly 3 and most often slipjoints.

I've had my 812HS for about a week now. It's a smallish knife but the steel liners and G-10 handles make it feel quite solid with a good heft for it's size.

Pocket clip isn't so great, interferes with the finger cutout and the feel of the knife. A custom clip would be a good addition, something smaller and curved along the handle.

Nice ergonomics and balance indeed. But I'm going to keep looking for a full-size model too, rare as they are these days, though.

I sold my M2 version not long ago...mainly due to that I didn't like the way it felt in my hand...the finger recess area made it difficult to use in different grips.

I prefer to be able to choke up on the blade more if needed.

I've had mine for years and I love it. It's an almost perfect EDC IMHO. Unfortunately I got the PS liner lock model because thats all the local gun store had. I didn't realize that they were discontinued and I went looking recently to buy a new one with PE and axis lock. I had trouble finding one so I got a 710 Mchenry Williams. It's got a very similar blade in size and shape with the addition of a recurve. Im very satisfied except the opening hole in the AFCK is better than the 710's thumb stud. I find the thumb stud a little too small and close to the handle. I can operate it no problem but I would much rather have the hole.

It's a nice knife, has good balance. I think there's better today, but it's a classic.

I have to agree with that.

I bought the recent limited edition M4 flavor AFCK because I liked the looks (reminds me of a Delorean automobile - stylish but dated; there is something very 1980 about it), because they are so hard to come by, and because I see it as one of the real icons in the world of folders.

If its scarcity were removed from the equation, I'd say a good street price on a new one should not exceed that of a Military. Good knife, used to be the class leader, but its not that much different than a 710 when you think about it.

I think it is actually a better design than the 710, mostly because I dislike recurve edges and because the hole is easier to handle than the thumbstuds.
I think the best one is the 806D2, which I will always regret not buying when they were available for under 150$.
I bought several of the newly released M4 LE and I have mixed feelings about them. True, the ergos are really good (not as good as a Millie or a Manix, though), but the edge is poor even by BM standards. I mean, here is a knife using M4 steel that has a grind angle so wide that it has to be re-profiled in order to have a decent edge.
Once you do re-profile it, it is indeed a very nice blade, although I would pick a FFG over it anytime.
Also, with S90V around, I wonder if M4 is worth the trouble, being non-stainless, especially since that involves having a coated blade.

To me, the Axis AFCK has for some reason never been one to desire. I'm sure it's very good and the Axis lock is a very nice invention (have the BM710 too) but no, something is just not right there. Wrong look I guess, the AFCK just needs to be the liner-lock kind IMO.

And they do look wicked cool when done right! Veeerry sleek indeed, sort of a forward-rushing appearance. Silly reason to want one maybe but works for me. :D

I have been thinking about organising my small collection into designated roles, and the big AFCK is pretty much the lead candidate for the "tacticool" position, the same way the Spyderco Manix has a role as the big dependable workhorse.

I suppose the ultimate find and winner would the big brother of my Mini, the 800HS. But they are going for already what, around $ 300 -ish these days? Expensive little toys.

I've got a Pre-Production prototype of the small AFCK in M4. Great Steel!
I'll but this one if it comes out.

The AFCK M4 quickly replaced my Manix (real Manix), which had replaced my Military.

The AFCK has perfect balance for an EDC (dead on the lead finger, which is locked in place by the choil). M4 is incredible steel, although with this knife it has to be reprofiled to take advantage of its incredibleness. The pointy-est of pointy points. Axis lock combined with Spyder hole is a hall of fame combination. The design is sleek and ergonomically curved, with no extra lines or bells and whistles. It does the spyderhole better than Spyderco.

Top quality materials and construction. Steel-lined G10 handle.

Fast. Lean. Solid. Leggy. I might ding it for not having a full flat grind, but other than that it's your basic perfect.

Some people say that the AFCK is one of the best knives that Benchmade has ever made. I come to the scene late and never have the chance to handle one, and is unlikely to get one in future now that this model had been discontinued. To those lucky brothers who have had the AFCK, can you tell us the good (or the bad) points about this knife?

I have had the mini and have the 806. Don´t worry, there are knives as good as the 806, even though or maybe because they don´t have that large blade.

The AFCK as an old queen of tactical knives still. Handling, grip ans everything is great, but in some respect newer designs has surpassed the the AFCK.

Hi all. New member, and my first post.

Back in the summer of 1996, I broke the tip off of my EDC, a Spyderco Endura, and went to a local surplus store looking for a replacement. While looking at Spyderco and Cold Steel products, the counter guy handed me a mini-AFCK. Combo edge in ATS-34. I thumbed the blade open, closed it, and asked the guy why they had loosened the hinger screws to make it open so easily. he smiled, and handed me one still in the box, still factory sealed. I opened the box, thumbed open the blade, and reached for my wallet. I've never had a knife of any design (except autos and assisted opening) open as easily in my hand. 13 years later, it now laying on my desk in front of me. the ergonomics are perfect for me, the liner lock has never failed in my use, and the blade is easy to maintain. All I do is keep it sharp, clean, adn put a couple of drops of BreakFree in the hinge from time to time.

if they release an updated version, I'm in the market.

Does anyone know the exact production dates for the standard 800 & 812 AFCK's with round opening hole.
Thank you,
