To use or not to use?

I just took a look at the new Yahoo shopping site. Looks good. I saw a few familiar blades though, as they are under my bed with the dust bunnies as we speak. That brings me up to the subject of this post, should I use these puppies? I can always buy other blades to use, and I already do have plenty of khukuris. But given the fact that the blades on the shopping site are held out as exemplars of those particular models, do you think they have any increased value because they are especially identifiable? Should I keep these in pristine condition?

You'll have to make that decision. Some of the 'blems' are blems in name not feature. As for resale- unused blades are worth more on the market.

But using these khukuris are what they were made for. And there is a joy there.

My humble opinion? USE them! That's what they were made for. And you could then post a testimonial about them here, for newbies to read and envy. Again JMHO. Worth about what you paid for it.:D

Edited to add: Use them, unless you have no real reason to use them. In which case you could ship them to me.:D :D

The kamis especially Bura would take it bad if you don't use your khuks. They are very useable and will take quite a beating. The least you should do is check the tang. To do that find something like a 2X4 or a thick log and wail away at it. The 2X4 won't do anything to mar the blade if you want to keep it for display. Be aware that certain things like most foods will stain the blade because they aren't stainless steel. Kinda adds a neat touch to them. There have been numerous threads on the different patinas that can be put on the blade. Different things leave different colors, etc.
Some khuks are better for chopping firewood and some work great in the kitchen. Have fun!:D

Increased value because they are on the site? Probably not. Increased value as the years go by because they are the very best of their kind? Yes, probably.

We will all die someday, and there will be no further line of manufacture, transportation, marketing, display and sales of H. I. Khuks.

Maybe 2050? A BURA (insert your favorite kami name here) will be the stuff of legend.

But Bill Martino ALWAYS says the khuks are made to be used.

Your choice.:)

By the time these knives become worth a lot more than what you paid we ourselves will have become antiques.

Use a couple for regular use and keep the rest in good condition just for lookin' at.

I guess it's the same reason people collect those spoons from different places. They probably won't be worth much in the end, but it's a hobby.

Now the stuff that John Powell has, that might be a different story.

I vote for using them, but ultimately, they are your khukuris, so you must decide what you want to do with them. If you use them, they will become scratched, etc. They will no longer be pristine. If having pristine khukuris is important to you, then don't use them.

It's all relative...

After I had handled a Kothimoda and a Dhankuta, I had no trouble commiting the rest of my wares to work-duty...even \especially\ the YCS and Berk Special.

;)

More random thoughts...

I've found that I like the one's I've used more than the unused ones. Just use one that you have two of. You have two of everything don't you? :)

Then again I don't have all of them fancy ones like Pen does.

I only have one of the models that I have. The closest I can get to two of a kind will be the 12" AK's but, one of those is a Bura standard and the other is a Kumar Villager. I just don't have any thing unused and I love them all. Ain't fixin to get rid of any either. I will have those khuks in my hand to use again.:)

It would be real tough to have one you really liked- it called to you, etc etc, and not be able to use it for fear of marring.
Why'd you like it in the first place?

What do they call those things men get so they can show up their peers? Oh yeah- trophy wives.

I exclude the flag ship khuk from this over generalization- some works of art are just there for everyone to enjoy.

Kamagong,
It's true all H.I. khukuris are ment to be used, but I only use dups or villagers. My "one of a kinds" and singles are for my collection.

Some of hte simple rules I've followed in life.

Knives are meant to cut

Guns are made to be shot

Cars are made to be driven

WOmen are meant to be loved.

Simple, easy, and nothing crass(not in W&C< but jsut making sure. ;) )

And I can't fault a single soul for doing that. I don't think the villager metal is always the same as the regular HI stuff, so if you only use a Villager you may not be getting all of what HI has.

If I had enough money for duplicates I'd do the same thing. Course, if I had enough money for duplicates instead of duplicates I'd buy more firearms..

True...... But he also said " Debt is good"

I don't think so. Collect 'em one at a time, when I can afford them. I have no interest in collecting a new bill. (ie: make payments on.) My old lady has that down for the both of us.

Personally, I use every one.

Ironically, Brian....

I betcha many folks owe Bill for stuff he's sent to them and never hear about it from him. It's up to them to pay. Unusual guy. If he decides to trust you...you are golden. HI debt is a gentle thing.

Be well and safe.

I'll bet you're right. I guess I'm so used to paying as I go, I'm a little jaded. Of course, being a collector for a large credit card company hasn't helped.

Ha, I heard that PZ. Work IS for a collections agency. And when you Start loading new accounts and notice that the totals are into multiple millions of dollars, and see packets(groups of peopls debt) that are 50 grand or more(That doesn't even get into medical side of collectiosn,w here we routinely hit a quarter million or more), it tends to make you want to avoid debt. :)

I got 6 digits in student loan debt alone...

But I also have managed a way to pay it off and live a decent life...but I'm still no doctor or lawyer = $$$
