To wave or not to wave on the Delica?

I've decided to get a new EDC, and I had it narrowed down to a Mini-Griptilian or a Spyderco Delica. Mainly for price reasons, I think I want to go with the delica. Anyway, now I really can't decide if I want to go with the "wave" or not. I know it's personal preference, but I'd like some opinions from people who may have handled them.

I will need to order whatever knife I decide on off the Internet, because there are NO quality knife shops within 100 miles of my town. Ideally I would personally handle the knives myself to aid in my decision, but that is not an option. Thanks for any and all advice or suggestions!!

On a side note, I was wandering how many of you use the wave as a bottle opener? I like my beer as much as the next guy, and I love the thought of having a decent bottle opener on my EDC blade. Thanks again!!

I'm not a wave fan personllay. I have no need for rapid deployment and I actualy like opening my knives. I also do not like the looks of wave blades but that JMO.

Have you owned a waved knife before? If not, know is a good time to try one. And yes, they make excellent bottle openers.

I edc'd a delica wave for a long time, (and still do at work) it makes a great bottle opener, and I find it really handy. I dont use the wave all the time but it is a nice feature to have. The only down side is it dosn't look as nice as the regular delica- but thats a small price to pay IMO.

I say get the wave, its great to have and it's not like you cant open it normally if you want too.

Ziptie it, call it waved. That way you won't weaken the pre-existing weakest point.

If you want a bottle opener, keep the knife closed and use the butt end of the handle. Works like a champ.

I have had waved and non-waved. Firstly, the wave makes a terrific bottle opener. Secondly, the wave is great at opening the knife when you want it to, but great at opening the knife when you don't want it to.

What I mean by that is if you aren't paying attention when you take it out of your pocket or waistband, you perpetually have a half-open knife coming at you -- at least I did. I've settled on non-waved Delica and waved Endura as my choices.

I have a waved Endura and it is cool but for normal EDC I would go non waved. Like another said sometimes the wave will want to catch when you don't want it to.

Thanks for the info! I have never even seen a waved knife in person, but the concept intrigues me.

I had a waved delica for a while. I wasn't horribly opposed to it, but I had to change my grip after the draw anyway, so I never really saw a point. Plus I think it's handier to know how to use the handle (or closed blade) since it's very similar to using a Bic lighter for opening bottles.

I've had both and highly recommend the wave. You don't always need to open the knife by waving it. In fact I rarely did, but it was always another option to have and it did work well as a bottle opener. I see only advantages of having the wave.

I own a waved and unwaved endura. They are both great but I edc the waved one. I like being able to have the knife readily open when I pull it out of my pocket.

A self waved Spyderco looks like crap. A factory waved model looks fine, but limits the depth you can stab something, so if thats a concern, its something to think about.

If stabbing depth is a concern, buy a waved Endura :D

I own a waved Delica. I don't regret purchasing it, but I have little use for the wave feature.

I never got used to drawing the knife in an open position. Drawing a waved knife is easy to do, and I did it when I carried that knife, but it doesn't seem to offer any extra convenience. (I don't measure my package opening in fractions of a second.)

I don't understand all of the people who say the D4 makes a great bottle opener. I just got a beer out of the fridge (a Windmer Pitch Black IPA :) ) to make sure I wasn't crazy. The wave mangles the cap and takes a couple of attempts to remove it completely. I would rank it below the vast majority of dedicated bottle openers and only slightly above the Bic-lighter technique (which works with pretty much any knife too).

Despite this, I'd still recommend you get the D4 wave. Why? Owning one is the best way to determine if you like this feature (a lot of people do). It doesn't take away from the functionality, so if the price isn't a concern, get it.

I like the wave and it's fun to play with and practice drawing and changing grips super fast. I'm pretty good at it now. You just have to pay attention because as someone already said, you get a half open blade if you don't use the wave and manualy open it without paying attention.

I have an SE waved endura. I never had any luck using the wave as a bottle opener. The wave is tough on your pockets, but works well. I'm a tip down guy though, so waves aren't really my style.

Also, I don't believe spyderco is making the waved versions anymore (could be wrong) so get one while you can.

I have to add: you will see the waved versions advertised with grey handles. Really they come in a navy blue, like a police officers uniform type color.

I love my waved Endura and I would like to get a Waved Delica, make an awesome bottle opener. You don't have to draw the knife "waving" it. You can pull it out w/o using the wave if you'd like and if you do open withe wave you can do it fast or slow. Same knife as the regular delica, but with more options ;]

I think I may have just been talked into a waved delica! Since it is such a different looking knife by many peoples standards, do you find yourself getting many "funny looks" or comments from people about the knife?

I couldn't see that with a delica, its not a big knife. If you go pulling it out in line at the bank though...

Also, keep in mind that you can also wave forward, into a reverse grip with little to no need for a grip change. You can see that in this video.
