So I went to the Jefferson County Memorial Forest today to get a brief little hike in. It is a nice little woods area about 20 minutes out of downtown Louisville. I did the Horine Red Trail. It's about 4 miles long with 1500 feet or so of elevation change. It's been a while since I've had some outdoors time so it was nice to stretch my legs. Here are the pictures. I only took a few.

A really nice clearing with picnic tables and such

A look up through the trees

Turns out the Izula is quite a chopper

The only wildlife I caught on film. The baby was too fast.
P1011276-2.jpg

Well, I kind've caught the baby.

A huge, awesome looking old stump. Note the Izula for scale.

You can tell I was very, very deep in the backwoods.

A cool little bridge walkway.

Some views of the trail ahead.

I set up a snare to catch wild Magnussens. They just come bumbling through the trees, snorting and grunting, and usually hit the trigger and go flying. They are tough when cornered, though.

Lunchtime.

Cinnamon Apple Ranger bar. Yum.

I dunno what this thing was, but it was tasty.

Try not to be intimidated

Yep, I finally got a boonie. I like it quite a bit. I wish it had better ventilation, but it's a good hat to keep the ticks and the sun off.

My latest fire kit build.

Some bladeforums patches.

Everybody post in here telling me how awesome my pictures are. After 50 replies, I will randomly pick two people to get these patches. Sound good? :D

Very nice pictures of the woods around Louisville.

Doesn't look too much like Kansas, though. ;)

that unidntifiable thing looks to me like crushed cinnemon poundcake. It's been a year since I was in so someone feel free to correct me, but...
As for boonie hat breathing, correct me if I'm wrong but yours doesn't look like USGI issue to me. Those have vent holes and breathe very well-you can even drip water inside and it will keep your head cool for hours at a time. Oh, and nice pics ;)

Yep, quite a bit more elevation variation than in Kansas.

Mine is labeled Field and Stream. Got it at Dick's. I looked at the ones at a Surplus store and they didn't fit very well. Oh well.

Your pictures are awesome and you are extremely intimidating. I wouldn't want to meet you in a light alley :D I'm sure that sword of yours is tucked away in your pants isn't it?

Looks like a great little firekit. I'd pull out one tea candle and replace it with a little bit of charcloth and a fresnel lens - you know, just for variety. Thanks for the contest on those coveted patches!

son of a gun, it's those patches again...there seems to be a conspiracy of silence about where they come from...

Awesome pictures!

+1 on the candles, I think more people should include them in their kits.

I don't want to meet anybody in a dark alley that can chop down a tree like that with an Izula!! Cool pictures though, I'm back in school in Nebraska, and the territory around Lincoln here isn't quite that cool. Your very AWESOME pictures have cheered me up after getting skunked while fishing this afternoon. The flashlight and fire kit are pretty cool as well.

Strikingly, that area looks very similar to mine, though maybe not quite as thick with the underbrush.

Pretty good shot of that raccoon! Usually when I try to shoot animals, I get crystal clear all around them, and the animal itself is as blurry as if I was using a 1 second shutter opening.

Cool pics, thanks for sharing.

There is absolutely no cheating when you make a fire, especially if it's getting late, cold, damp or dark.

don't take this the wrong way, but get a real boonie cap, that thing looks like it's made for winter.

:D

Just remember to run downhill and turn suddenly whenever a Magnussen is chasing you. They cannot stop well as they are somewhat top heavy, they have something really dense in their cranial cavity that causes this. :D
In Kansas it may be difficult to find a hill so offering food is recommended.

By the way, those pictures are incredible! Especially that one, I really like that one. It may be my favorite picture of all time.

 That tree is huge compared to the Izula  It is a wonder I love the Izula so much!

Cool pics, seems as if you had quite a day out there ;)
