So wait, the knives being shown in this thread are not customs but midtechs? Are these the knives made by Reate as Todd Begg Steelcraft?
The knives in this thread are made from our group of 6 craftsman that build these and have been building them for 5 years together at our shop in northern California. Midtech is an ambiguous term. I think people assume that as a mid tech you have parts made then you assemble them and finish them but we make all of our parts in our shop. These are really a group custom build. Our team here has all brought their own abilities and ideas to the table to be able to achieve these kind of finishes on a knife that some like to call a mid tech or a production. We are fine with that but when we compete in those categories at knife shows I have a feeling they will want to redefine what this really is.

You didn't dream it.. for sell now and only $10 more that the mini, but not nearly as ornate IMO. Personally I own a mini, but I have mixed feelings on the whole "Begg/Steelcraft" thing. Something knida sad about an extraordinary knife/knife maker leanding a name and/or design to be mass produced as an authorized sort of clone. I dunno, just have mixed feelings about "affordable offerings" from the renowned makers.... Much like my view on my Southard Tolk, I like the knife enough to have bought one, but it seems like I am settling for less than what I would really like (an actual genuine Southard)

Well are are always happy to make a custom order for you from our shop in California. The things that is important here to realize is we make around 20 to 30 knives a month in our shop in Petaluma north of Sanfrancisco. We would not have been able to continue making knives with these kind of low numbers. It is extremely difficult to make knives at this level and not very profitable with so many employees and equipment. There is so much time involved in making a knife like these listed that it's really a passion thing because some months it does not pay for itself its funded by the Steelcraft line. Even after almost 2 years doing SteelCraft we are constantly burdened with mountains of challenges to pull this off. We made a decision right from the beginning with SteelCraft that we would be upfront about who and where these knives were made. The problem that is going on is lots of companies are making inexpensive product there and lying about it and stamping made in the USA. We will never go down this path. We are committed to being transparent and give people the best product we can for their money. The U.S. trade law allows companies to call product made in the USA if they can show billing over %51 of the product is done in the USA but this is just an accounting game. We stood right out in front when we did this 2 years ago and we took a lot of fire but the product IMO speaks for itself and people are really going by this now more than origin. We never stopped making knives in our shop for the high end market but we have been wanting to see if people would like to see a basic knife made here for much less here from us. Our shop is open to any visitor any time. We love to show people what we do here what makes us tick.
We are right across the street from Lagunitas brewery and about 5 more. Just saying. :) We are always open to peoples custom requests.

MUCH respect! I thinks your points are very well made and I appreciate the time you took to share this information... perhaps a knife from you guys would be a good add to my collection! :)

Great looking knives and it's cool that you guys are so willing to have visitors at the shop. Maybe someone close by can go and share some pictures

I would love to see somebody from the forum come and see our shop and do some reporting on what we do here. We would like to get people that are on the forum to come join us and have a barbque once and a while here. We are surrounded by breweries.

As a guy who has been to Petaluma I can attest to Marks statements in regards to passion and making a "best product for the money". I have been a big fan of Todds work for almost as long as i have been on the Forums. If I win the lottery I'll have a $10,000 Begg knife collection.
I told Todd he was one of those few guys whose almost every design I like. I hung out at the shop for about 40 minute's talking to Todd and Drew and appreciated their time. As a former mechanic I know how intrusive customers can be when time is money. A very accommodating bunch.
I was in San Rafael visiting my daughter and new grandson, third time in 8 months, while her husband was away for work. I knew Todd was not far away so we took a nice road trip. Some time after I returned to Tucson I received a package from Begg knives. It was a tricked out Glimpse my daughter had the guys make for me as a thank you for babysitting. I carry it on special occasions as it is a true masterpiece od machining. If you can afford one, you will not be disappointed. Kevin.
