Tom Brown Tracker Knife

I just watched the youtube clip where the guy makes a bow with the Tracker knife. Look at how many blows he uses to cut that tree! 80 blows!!! And look at that tree, it's not a big tree... let me have a go at that tree with my Busse Ash or Black Jack Quick.... I rest my case : )

Well if you look at it, he really isn't hitting it very hard. It's not like Noss going trough a 2X4.
My thought was that he is able to do a lot lot of stuff with the tracker, not that there is not better knives out there.

Is the Tom Brown Tracker Knife a useful outdoorsman tool or an over rated movie prop?...... I am thinking about purchasing one and would like to know if it is an all around field knife that can be used for cutting, chopping and other fieldcraft tasks?

overrated movie prop.

Red Scorpion six has a carbon steel version of their predator coming out some time soon. It'd be a far better option that the TOPS Tracker.

I'm no survival specialist but I've spent a lot of time in the field and a leatherman wave, benchmade AFCK, and machete has served 99% of my needs. The other times I needed a chainsaw. Just my .02

I hate mine so much, I'm sending it to pitdog. He wants one. I spent the afternoon putting a convex edge on it so that at least it might cut a little.

Why to have one knife that doesn't perform as well as two "specialized" knives do? And if you lose the other knife, you still have the other one.

im very unimpressed with mine. its a large and awkward, doesnt do anything well. same your money and buy something worth having.

I have never handled one, so take with a grain of salt.

I think it is an over rated piece of movie hype. It was meant to do all sorts of different things, which isn't what a knife should be made for. A knife is what it is, a CUTTING TOOL. Not a Axe/Knife/skinner/Saw. Maybe it can do a couple of things good, but it likely cannot do anything great. Use the right tool for the job. If you want to skin game, use a smaller knife that can skin. If you want to chop a tree, get a large knife. If you want to saw knotches, use a saw.

Just my opinion though.

I have a better option for ya.

The Tracker is indeed a chunk of junk.

I have a 12 inch Ang Khola kukri from Himalayan Imports. It is about the same size. However it chops far better, takes a fantastic edge, works better as a knife overall, and acts as a superior drawknife. Plus it comes with a serviceable small knife for all those small tasks. To top it off it'll cost ya less than half as much.

Kukri's are great survival tools. I know I used my M-43 model for several years in just that role even building two log cabins with it.

As for notching...use the blade and a baton.

do NOT limit your opinion of a wsk to the tracker, there are plenty others that you may like better or worse

I have read almost all of Tom Brown Jr.'s books and have enjoyed them and they have created a deep felt respect for his knowledge and what he has done on the whole for nature conservation- motivating people to enjoy the outdoors.
THAT said, I think the TBT knife is something that is inferior to other tools in the same class. I think that this would even be better suited as a one tool carry http://www.survival.com/atax.htm but I do not own either one.
