What do you think of Tom Brown? Ive read his books and they are really good. Very informative. I want to know what others think?

his info is good... A little too much of the psuedospiritual mumbo jumbo incorporated in hos teachings for me but that's just my opinion...Like I said thought the info is good

He's a little "to much" for me if you know what I mean. Like Riley said to much of the Psuedowhatnow.

That is a loaded ??? my friend, that will bring up a lot of different opinions.

Same say he is the best thing to happen to outdoor survival since the cave man;), while others say he is on the verge of a self absorbed mad man. I have no real opinion due to that fact I have never read any of his books, or attended any of his coursed.

Search is your friend. Use the term "Tracker" to search this sub forum and you will find a wealth of info. I'll warn you that lots of them turn into factions pitting against each other.

I think he is a highly skilled wilderness expert, and definitely would want him along if I were lost in the woods. Some of his stories are pretty outrageous and can be taken however you want to take them. But I own almost all of his books and enjoy the information in them.

Tknife speaks the truth. Someone that has READ his material, uses what is useful (probably most of it), and takes the "BS" for what it's worth.

Well said TK:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Read the posts by Dirttime Dude and George below as there is considerable wisdom as well as insight...

FYI, Hawk has a very good reputation in primitive circles.

It is a shame so many people define themselves by TBj and the Tracker school. As he says, "prove me right or prove me wrong." I believe the story about what happened at Rabbit Stick recently. I have also read and heard other inconsistencies in his 'stories.'

"Prove me right or prove me wrong." Boneset is a plant that got its name for its properties in regards to breakbone fever. In his medicinal/edible plant book he goes on about how it was used on himself to heal a broken bone. Ethnobotany does not show where it was ever used by abos for broken bones and there are no chemical properties that it would indicate bone healing properties. Yet here is another eloquent story of how it did the impossible and where at the end of the story he covered his tracks (no pun intended) by saying most don't know about its ability to heal bone and then states its other true curative attributes.

I can't help but think he told a story about the plant before knowing its true attributes and was then cornered into this story. Sorry, but I call B.S. Maybe I am wrong, who knows.

The fact that so many people ask for an opinion should be your first clue. I apologize for being derogatory, not typically my style, but I strongly suggest getting training or info from another source (first), at least that way you can put the stories into perspective.

I think Pen & Teller did a story on Tom Brown and basically said - get a job an buy what you need to survive instead of doing all Tom's primative stuff - very funny.

Codger 64 i have read his bio and i agree that the only way to build his knowledge was to experiance it, and he has done that. He is also doing so much to teach people about conserving the earth and not destroying it. Its great to hear what others think.

Man. I'm glad I'm not famous.

Dude, tell me about it. every time I missed pissing into a bush and splattered something I'd be told I obviously didn't know dick about how to drive. :jerkit:

Dude isn't perfect. As far as I can tell, doesn't claim to be. (In fact, word from a few students is that he's a dick at least in part to dispel guruism, but that's hearsay if I repeat it)

He's skilled. He has mythology around him. He has people pissed off because he makes money instead of giving his life as some priest of the W&S church- and the same people who bitch that he makes money bitch that he's too mystical!

No one I've met who has taken a class has regretted it. No one I've met who has taken a class agrees with everything he says nor thinks he's perfect.

If I was as judgemental about the dude at 7/11 when I go to buy a newspaper as people are about tom borwn, I'd never spend any money in a store. Or be able to get a car repair.

1968, eh, whatever. I'm a veteran, proud of my service, but I can't see as a draft is constitutional any way I read it. *I* sure as hell don't do things simply because the government says so.

Nut job who charges obscene money for classes he does not even teach.

Yes, I admit he knows a couple things but so do a million other instructors at a decent price.

Skam

What, Skam? You doubt the Grand High Shaman of Tracking?

I respect what he has done on some levels. Long before Survivorman and Idiot vs. Wild, he was bringing awareness to the general public.

I find it interesting that as much as he self-markets, I've yet to see any coverage of a SAR find or apprehended fugitive. Never seen coverage of the famous TBjr at a fugitive op or SAR event.

I've also been around the best trackers from the two agencies known for producing the premier professional trackers, and no one else claims to be able to determine what the subject ate or his mood just by looking at the "pressure releases" in the foot sign. Color me skeptical.
