Tom Mayo TNT

this is a VERY touchy subject.....as many knifemakers are getting parts off of cnc machines.....but I also know of TWO VERY WELL KNOWN knifemakers who do nothing but put them together.....I have a problem with this.....and one of the above sells over 30 knives a month......at $400+ each...I cant go along with this....but it is being done.

Whatever a maker uses to arrive at the final product is fine, they're all tools; however its harder to appreciate work where the maker has become a slave to the tool rather than the other way around. At what point is the maker just an assembler, marketer or designer of expedientcy? There are some who "cookie cut" knives but are still willing to at least entertain customizations beyond the cosmetic and there are those who won't or can't even do relatively inoccuous modifications (left handed versions, etc). I don't see how the later can really be "custom" makers. Authorship is a whole other can-o-worms.
I know Tom isn't a slave to his bridgeport...are you Tom?

didnt know if i should answer that or not, but I have an OLD hardinge brothers mill with a small bridgeport head that is so loose it might have been a prostitute in tijuana in another life......so I dont use it a lot....just to cut the lock slot and the opening hole on the blade...thats about all......wish I had a bridgeport...or any other REAL mill....someday...

Tom,

Nice knife! Love the recurved blade.

But do you charge by the hole?

If you catch Tom when he is tired of making folders, you just might get a nice talonite boot knife (Complete with lots of holes!).

Maybe that TNT recurve should be on my Christmas list....

PS: As far as service goes, Tom is the only custom knife maker who has sent me a personal email reminding me to VOTE! Need I say more...?

Tom, ever think about doing a Talonite folder with Ti bolsters and Koa wood handles?

I've handled the fixed blade you made for Eric (Keninshiro) and the Koa handle is fantastic - seems to have a unusual 3D effect. Used to think desert ironwood was tops but not any more
