I ordered a heavy duty fillet knife from Tom Mayo 8-1-99. He had a blank in stock and said it could be finished in two weeks, if I was in a real hurry. I received it today, and it is every bit as nice as the picture on his site www.mayoknives.com
The blade is BG-42 7.5" and a 4.75" handle. The blade is 1.25" wide, and the finished stock is .180 . The tang is of the Japanese Style, Short heavy with a large singe rivet. This makes for a water proof system with the epoxy to seal the tang as an engineered unit.
I have a piece that was made like this, by Ray Beers 20 years ago, and it is still going strong.Tom has all his blades heat treated by Paul Bos, and uses, ATS-34, BG-42, 440V, and 420V. On this piece the cost to result ratio is very high. I will be talking to Tom about another piece real soon.
