Tomahawk -just because!

ain't nothin' wrong with a good hatchet either, and they don't scream 'tacticool'.
They're not bad for hammering soft stuff, but no spike for breaching.
Some traditional hatchets have hardened hammer polls.
Oh yeah, I want a custom tomahawk bad, but from a practical standpoint you can still do well with 'normal' equipment.

I've got an Winkler Combat axe on the way. Perfect for everything from chopping wood to fighting to chopping down doors(ask Edwood ;) ).

Tapers from a 1/2" thick 5160 head to I believe 3/16" at the "prybar" pommel.

RMJ is also a good choice: http://www.rmjtactical.com/

Both companies are great, but that Combat axe is 3/8" thick and tapers to 1/8" at the butt of the handle. Still, that thickness is perfect for it's size/weight/purpose.

I'm quite the fan of the Guild Knives and Tools CQB Hawk:

My bad. :D Still, I doubt you'll ever manage to break it, and if you DO, Mr. Winkler will likely replace it.

Shorttime , it is better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it ! ;) With that said , I second JK Knives for a modern Hawk or Coal Creek Forge for a more traditional Hawk , Steve is a great guy !
I also live in the city but have a Cassam Hawk on order.:D

Heh. I kind of forgot about this thread for a couple days.

Well... I spend a lot of time here....

I've been giving this some thought. I don't do a lot of chopping, exactly, and I'm not sure how much I really need a hawk.

It started off as "just because", but I thought about it. I might have the need to to clear a path through steel, concrete, or glass. I can bust a 2X4 without anybody's help.

With that in mind, I've been thinking about something like an Estwing rock hammer. Not as cool as a tomahawk, but more practical for me.

I'm willing to be convinced otherwise, though....
