Since I've scoured a crap load of tomahawk information off this forum, it's time to give back a little. I've got a copy of Cold Steel's The Fighting Tomahawk DVD to passaround. Same rules as FCSJedi's passaround apply. Preference will be given to participants of the previous hawk DVD passarounds and ya gotta write a review. :D

First person need to e-mail me their address, the next person on the list e-mails them their address, so on and so forth...

Hi:

Never posted here before, but I have been reading with great interest for several weeks. I have recently gotten in a Trail Hawk, a Condor thrower and one of the Harbor Freight Fireman's Hatchets to play with. Mods on the Trail Hawk are in progress, and will post sufficient pics to establish some "hawk cred" soon.

Just wanted to get in line for some DVD action, if that is alright.

To begin my review, I must apologize for the delay in posting. It has been a bloody zoo here lately.

The Cold Steel "Fighting Tomahawk" DVD is a 2 volume set. Audio and video quality is excellent. The DVD is a very straightforward and comprehensive primer on the tomahawk and totally free of the kind of bombastic hype that usually surrounds Lynn Thompson.
The introduction begins with Lynn Thompson describing, briefly, the history of the tomahawk and the statement that use of the tomahawk in combat needs extreme aggression to be successful. I can't agree more.Nothing is 100%, but this is most generally true.
A lot of time is spent talking about training safely. keeping training realistic, and safety equipment. This, I feel is extremely important, as serious injuries can occur if proper precautions are not taken. Also, a brief time is given to sharpening and repair of 'hawks.
Mr. Thompson says that the tomahawk is a 1 shot-1 kill weapon. While tomahawks can cause debilitating injuries, that's pushing it a bit.
One thing that I really liked was a detailed explanation of the advantages and disadvantages of the tomahawk as a weapon, based on its shape, length, and weight distribution, and a good explanation as to why certain things are possible or not possible in real fights.
Fighting is broken down into discussions of grip, stance, footwork, blocking, parrying and attack, with and without other weapons. Defense is given proper attention. Amazingly Mr. Thompson advocates running away as the first, best option, if possible. Given the mall ninja tone of some of CS advertising, I didn't expect advocation of this extremely common-sensical option.
The training is broken up in a systemized way, well organised, and balanced well between lecture and demonstration.
There are short bonus sections on defense against a bayonet and throwing the 'hawk. They are of limited usefulness, but worth watching. It's always good to have an extra tool in your belt.
Overall, an excellent effort. Worth the money for the beginner to get the fundamentals down right.

messer454- please resend me your addy. Thank you

i really liked your review fudo:thumbup: thanks!

i think it might make it better if there was a separate review thread like for the Keating tapes. it makes it easier to follow without the next on list posts imho:)

I've had this DVD for some time so I'll just jump in with my review comments on it.

Fudo: Your review is pretty much the same as mine. The only thing about the DVDs that I was not sure of was the Reverse Grip material. I actually got out and did some throwing that way and was completely surprized at how effective it was at close range. Could not hit squat beyound 15 feet. I don't how historic that technique is but it does work...particularly into the knees, abdomen, and groin area....Ugh ! Lynn's presentations take a bit of getting used to but I agree with you that this is some of his better work. This DVD definitely belongs on the shelf as a reference and brush-up on the basics. Count on him to show you how to bust up cow skulls and sides of beef. While he does a bit of 'dueling' with it he does show some close up techniques that make it a well rounded presentation. A good sister video to this is his Stun, Stagger, and Stop DVD on walking stick & cane defense. A lot of it has carry-over application to the tomhawk. Again pretty universal principles . Again, I highly recommend this video.

Best
Dwight

Dwight - You're right about that reverse grip. It looks weird, feels weird, but Lynn Thompson seems to be able to make it work. My manual dexterity is less now than it used to be, due to neuropathy in my hands, so I don't think it would work for me.

i guess i'm next. anyone try to copy this dvd on their computer. i got some dvd-r's
