I am probably considered biased  :) ...but I like the Cold Steel Trail Hawk
I have colleagues in the Survivalist community as well as many friends who hunt in dangerous and remote locations and the Trail Hawk seems to be an almost unanimous favorite.
I know several people who actually just pack the Hawk head in their pack - they use it as a knife, as a carving and scraping tool, as a wedge for batoning...you name it. They can then use it to fashion an improvised handle if needed.
It's pretty cool.

My favorites out of the Cold Steel tomahawks are the Spike and the Norse.

Hey Cold Steel... I would REALLY dig it if you made a Spontoon Tomahawk.

The Cold Steel Trail Hawk is one of my favorites. Get one from Vector001 (you can find him here, though he's not active here anymore) at equinoxcoronado.com They'll make sure you are happy with your hawk, and it's a pretty good mix of traditional and tactical, IMO.

I have an incredibly hard time deciding between the trail hawk and the pipe hawk. The both are amazingly good pieces of gear.

I have the Cold Steel rifleman, norse, spike, pole axe, and bad axe and special forces shovel etc etc.

They just can't be beat for the money! I've been throwing the rifleman for 12 years now!

Pipe hawk would be my first pick for hiking. The rifleman is a wonderful hawk, but heavy if you are packing it in. The spike hawk is just plain nasty! But minus the hammer poll it looses some utility points.

The trail hawk is light and handy, but I lioke a bit more edge and heft.

Since he mentioned his "survival kit" and something in between traditional and tactical...........I'm going to refer him to the ATC-VTAC. Yeah, I know.........Snakebreaker pimping the VTAC yet again. Oh we'll, it fits the criteria. What can I say............it has the classic lines so to speak, with new age composites and a history to back up its durability and functional use. Plus it's small and light, perfect for that on the go kit.
